Darn Those Motor Mounts!

Ok, So it is quite obvious that my trans, and motor mounts are out.....I can understand that they are going to be a painnnn...I am having a friend help me who knows way more about this than I. But, My question is, presay what to you smart people might be the "best" way to go about doing that, replacing the motor and trans mounts? In a detailed kind of a break down would be nice if possible to at least help us get a good idea.

Also, if it isn't to much to ask, I went to the auto store guy gave me three of the, and said these will work, although when my buddy got underneath there said it kind of didn't look like the ones we needed although he was not a %100 sure. So is there any good sites that would have a picture of the exact ones I would need, or even better if you could just post an image if you have one or know of where to get one. THANKS ALWAYs thirdgen.

Mr

trans

get a board the size of the pan and put a jack under it

remove the crossmember bolt that holds the mount to the member

jack up the trans slowly and stop when it binds and wont go any higher

remove two bolts that hold trans mount

put the new one in

engine

just know before hand that this is not for the faint of heart

get a 2x4 and cut two 4inch pieces

if you have the big dissy cap remove it

take out the bolts that hold the engine mounts to the clam shells

make another 2x4 that is approx 6 inch and set it in your jack vertically and jack under the harmonic balancer intill you fit the two 2x4s you cut to 4inch between the mounts and the clamshell

now the bolts in the front of the lower control arms need to be removed

with a jack under the control arm remove the bolt and let the control arm down

you need a good 15mm swivel socket dont try it without it

remove the bolts that hold down the motor mounts make sure you have some long extentions

jack up the motor agian and replace the motor mounts with the new ones and install the bolts threw the top so you put the nuts on in the bottom

let the motor down on top of the mounts and install those big long bolts between the mount and clamshell

here comes the part where you have to be a little bad ****

put a little grease in the 15mm socket and place the nut in the socket

if you can find some nuts that have the built in washer you will be better off

get those nuts on the best you can

jack up in the bottom of the control arm by the way do not leave this disconnected for any lenth of time

have a pry bar and a bfh hammer to adjust

oh yeah put the cap back on or youll go nowhere in a hurry

Re: Darn Those Motor Mounts!

while your at it replace the oil pan gasket when the 2x4s are in place

the oil pump and rear main seal

timing chain is a good thing too

that trans filter is old too huh

or you could do what everyone does

JUST ENOUGH

Three different trans mounts. You should be able to find a pic in the following thread:

Re: Darn Those Motor Mounts!

That method to reach the motor munts, has got to be the WORST I've ever heard of! Yeah....Let's support everything, balaced on the crankshaft...NOT! No mention of jack stands? Let's hope you just forgot to list them. In any case, pullig the a-arms loose isn't needed.

With the broke tranny mount, do it last. It'll make the motor mounts easier.

All that is needed forthe motor mounts,is under the engine, jack up one side of the engine, replace one, then the other side. The broken trany mount will allow the engine/tranny to "twist". If the tranny mount isn't BROKEN, loosen the bolts.

Re: Darn Those Motor Mounts!

In regards to getting the bolts in. I used a "wiz wheel" and cut the old motor mount bolts off. Take some craft wire and feed it through the top of the crossmember. Thread the wire onto the bolts and pull up through the old bolt holes. Be sure to use a lock washer on the bolt. Then hit it with an air gun and your done. Took me 15 minutes, but I didnt have an engine sitting in the bay!!
