How can i get my car to start on the first try?
How can i get my car to start on the first try?
To start off, i have an 86 z28. Anytime i start it, i have to pump the gas pedal a couple of times. and i have to do it like 3 times before it starts. All you hear is cranking, while i continuously press on the gas. What do i need to do to get it to start first try with just simply turning the key??
thank you.
thank you.

Well, I have a similar problem. My car is a 86 IROC with a TPI 305. It usually starts on the 2nd or third try without the pedal being pushed. My problem used to be exactly like yours. I replaced the Idle Air Control valve and now no pedal is required. Are you getting any codes? If your car is TPI then when in "Cranking" mode you are not adding any more fuel when you are pumping the gas, Just more air. (the ecm suspends fuel, limiting it to just what it is programed to "Squirt") At least that is how it was explained to me. You could check your 'cold start valve'....

Cold start injector, perhaps?
I believe we are talking about a TPI engine. Pumping the gas does nothing. It isn't like a carbureted car.

Replace the fuel filter, make sure it still has the drainback "flap". This is a q-jet right?
Make sure the well plugs aren't leaking. One way to check, when the car hasn't been driven for a day or two, remove the air cleaner and work the throttle with your hand, do you see the dual squirts, or is it dry? If it's dry, then you need to plug up the well plugs - they are leaking.
That's the typical sign of an old unmaintained carb'ed car. My car, cammed an all, will fire up with the FLICK of the key. It's great!
For the guy with FI, geez! I've never heard of that happening on an FI car! Check the codes?

Assuming q-jet:
Also check for proper operation of the choke. When cold, the choke butterfly should snap closed when you open the throttle a little.

Re: How can i get my car to start on the first try?
yeah, mine does that if i go a few days between starting it.i just rebuilt the carb and it will take 6 secs of crank to start but i dont have to pump it, could it be my well plugs?
a surefire fix
remove wiper fluid from reservoir and reroute hose to the primaries, fill with everclear, 1 sec of squirt should fix your problem
disclaimer: its fun when it backfires
