new motor woahs
alright so i got my new 350 in. everything works except it overheats. now i have the fan plugged in and it comes on. the waterpump and thermostat are new. i heard that if the catalytic converter is plugged that will cause it to overheat is this true? or if not what else could cause my engine overheat.
Re: new motor woahs
Could be a coolant leak, bad heat conductivity in the engine, not enough air flowing through the radiator, slipping fan clutch, also check your lower radiator hose, water pump impeller, and your radiator cap

is the air dam on it? without it ,it will heat. have you checked radiator to see if its stopped up? are you running a water/antifreeze mix, straight water will make it heat.let it run intil it reaches operating temperature, turn it off and see if top hose is hot, if not thermostat isnt opening.hope this helps, jimmy

Re: new motor woahs
theres no leaks. the impeller is good its a brand new water pump not a reman. i'll look at the radiator to see if it flows at all. but i put a new thermostat in it not to long ago. i used the same intake that i had on my 305. maybe i'll just replace my thermostat and put on a flex fan instead of a regular one

i can never remember what year, but GM changed to a reverse rotation water pump in either 87 or 88. make sure that your water pump is the correct rotation.
i always use the redline water wetter, and have had great results with it dropping coolent temps.

Re: new motor woahs
I'm pretty sure serpentine systems all have the reverse rotation pump. If your new water pump is the original style, there's your problem. If thats not the case check to see if she's running lean or if the timing is off. Definately inspect the air dam, and check all the usual suspects.

its not the waterpump the block is an older block and i got a waterpump that matches the year. have any of you guys heard of drilling a really small hole in the thermostat to allow air to bleed through. i heard that today not sure if i should try that. my next question is does anyone know where this wire goes in the pic. its by the electric motor for the hatch pull down

Re: new motor woahs
sometimes its just the little (although hugely significant) things that can cause issues.
the good thing though is that you didnt throw alot of cash at it, and it was nothing major.

Re: new motor woahs
Yes, the serpentine belt setups require the reverse rotation pumps that were already mentioned. Just buy a pump for the year of the car your serp system comes off of (do not by a reverse flow though...that's only for the LT motors).
