confused about tc lockup

I have been reading and reading and reading on switching my CC HEI to non CC HEI on 86 IROC with the 305 and 700R4. the carb is already non computer controlled and most of the emissions stuff is gone. I want to try putting a non computer controlled HEI destributor in it with the 4 pin module. so, when I do this will I have to worry about the torque convertor lockup? I plan on leaving the computer in it. the only stuff that has been removed is the stuff off the engine.

thanks

If you put a non-CC carb on, it already is missing what it needs to work.

You need to put a manual switch as described in the tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage, get a lock-up kit available from Summit & others, or hook up a 4th gear switch as described in several threads on the Transmission and Drivetrain forum.

Re: confused about tc lockup

thanks 57 , that explains allot, I didn't realize the carb had anything to do with that. it already had the non CC carb on it when we got the car. it has been cutting out at around 4500 rpm and I have been messing with the distributor all this time trying to fix my problem! turns out it was probably the torque converter all this time. guess we will go ahead and put a lockup kit in it. I still want to put the older non CC HEI in it though

Re: confused about tc lockup

The TCC won't have anything to do with it cutting out at 4500 RPM. You still need a lockup kit, though.

Re: confused about tc lockup

ok, the distributor is a computer controlled HEI and I think that's my problem with cutting out at 4500. I don't think the advance is right the way it is. I have read about the stock 7 pin ignition module being limited to 4500. the new vacuum advanced distributor is the 4 pin module and hopefully it will fix my problem, and thanks to you guys and this forum I can be running flawlessly in the next couple of weeks

Re: confused about tc lockup

If you're using the computer controlled HEI with a non-computer carb, you don't have any advance.

Re: confused about tc lockup

you need to hit up a swap meet or eBay and get a dizzy that has a vacuum advance. They are real cheap but clean it all up and replace the springs etc so it will run well for a good long time.

Re: confused about tc lockup

I just rebuilt an older vacuum advanced this morning, I put a new flyweight kit with bushings and springs in it and cleaned it up good I am going to put it on this evening and see how it does If I can figure out where to hook the advance to the carb!
