High idle/ Check engine light/ No hot start

I just picked up a 87 camaro 5.0 tpi 5spd it has a few problems. It starts up from cold fine but no matter what engine temp the idle is about 1600rpm. Then when ever i go to start it again it wont start unless i have the gas pedal ALL the way to the floor. Now the check engine light comes on and the idle goes to 1000rpm and setting a code 15.

I cleaned the throttle body blades and iac opening and didnt do anything i also found one the the small evap canister vacuum lines unplugged put it back and hasnt changed anything. So im stumped. The car has 41k miles and recent tune up. Im thinking i should test the IAC motor to see if its working but i dont know what the procedure is for testing it.

Re: High idle/ Check engine light/ No hot start

I had the same problem. Would idle at around 1500 rpm. Two things was wrong with what you are complaining about. One is the Coolant temp. switch that is at the front of the engine. As soon as I replaced that I could start up warm. $11 replacement at Auto zone. As far as the high idle goes mine was the Idle control motor.

Did you check for codes? If you got a code 15 then go buy a coolant switch.
I didnt have any codes for the ICM.

Hope this helps. Just got mine running after 3 years sitting in the garage with rebuild motor

I am going to replace the coolant sensor and figured the IAC motor is to blame for the high idle but what had me guessing is why did the idle drop when the check engine light came on for the coolant temp sensor and i didnt think a coolant temp sensor could cause a hot start problem.

Re: High idle/ Check engine light/ No hot start

I had a code 15 and car wouldn't start when warm. Changed out the CTS and poof, problem gone. Just make sure you have new CTS in hand ready to install when you take the old out. Easier to put in when ready and coolant is flowing out Hope this helps ya.

Ok i got a new sensor and now the connector is different then the old one? The old one is square the new one is almost like an oval. Does it require changing the plug to a newer style???

I'm not sure if you are looking at the correct sensor or not. But that is the coolant temperature switch. The CTS is located under the thermostat basically. Are you looking at that sensor? If it is square then I don't know what the correct one is. Mine was the one I linked above.

Re: High idle/ Check engine light/ No hot start

Its on the top of the engine almost behind the alternator on passenger side. The CONNECTOR is square with 2 prongs. The new sensor has a plug like the pic above (http://www.autozone.com/R,357763/veh...ductDetail.htm) and its a slightly different shape the what is on the car. What should i do??? I saw a quote on the parts screen at the store and it said somthing about maybe changing the pigtail out do to corrosion. But im not sure.?
