Rust Issue/Summit Cam & Lifters for TPI
I have the opportunity to purchase a brand new Summit SUM-G5000 Cam and lifter kit for $75 from a guy around the corner from me. The only thing that worries me is that there is some surface rust on the big cam lobes. If i was to hit it with abrasive cloth and then install it will it be ok? I hate to pass up on a great deal like this. The kit is brand new in the box with the lifters and springs.

Personally I would take it if I thought that it would rub off with abrasive cloth. Its only $75 I mean really what do you have to lose. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

Except that you can buy a NEW Summit cam and lifter set for only $90 with NO rust on it!
Example I grabbed that's the same as the cam you are looking at (which goes for $89):

Now here's the Summit G5000 kit (which goes for $149):
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
Frankly, I can't find ANY difference between the two cams. Both are hydraulic FLAT tappets with identical specs. The G5000 is a complete kit that comes with valve springs and retainers but the K1102 is just the cam and lifters. That looks like the difference in price to me.

I couldn't find the lobe separation angle on either cam. but there are now two different, but both common, 204/214, 420/442 cams on the market. One is the old original with a 112 degree lobe sep, and the other is the more recent 110 degree.
Yes, the 112 will make more vacuum, but the 110, with less advance, seems to work better for 350s once you get the tuning dialed in.

Yea i definately think the rust will come off. And it comes with the assembly lube, springs, lifters and cam. So if i clean it up will it be ok? And i was wondering if it was even worth installing on a 350 TPI. I hear for the money im spending id be better off with the stock cam. I hear the stock cam is a roller cam and delivers more power on a 5.7 TPI.

Hour stock cam has surprisingly little lift. It'd love a set of 1.6:1 rocker arms.
Either way, you'd need to be sure your valve stems aren't worn right at the point of max lift. I too have purchased cams with light rust, and a scotch-brite pad has always proved sufficient. Your stock cam has a very wide lobe separation angle, around 115 degrees. So the cam swap would increase overlap, which helps midrange torque, but might require a chip.
The rockers would not require a chip.
Did that $75 include new lifters? If not, you'd be better off with either the rockers, or of you're willing to buy a chip, the HOT cam.

I definately want to get the most horse power with out spending too much. Yea for $75 i get the lifters also. My car has a hypertech chip installed that came with the car when i bought it. Would the hypertech chip be suffician with the summit cam, lifters and spring combo? And how much does a hot cam run for? Ive heard good stuff about that cam.

The HOT cam goes for just under $200, new. It kinda seems like it turns on around 3000 rpm, great fun to some, annoying to others.

You definitely don't want to go backwards to a flat tappet cam. Although it could be done, in addition to the cam kit you'd have to purchase new pushrods. The flat tappet rods are longer.
Swapping in a new roller will not require new roller tappets, but will likely require new springs.

Be aware that that cam with TPI may necessitate a custom chip to correct the fuel curve, and maybe timing.
