In theory...

Could you bore and stroke a 305 to a 383. Technically its the same block as a 350 but with a smaller bore and stroke. So if you did some serious boring so 4.030 then slapped a 3.750 stroke on it you'd have the 383. what do you guys think?

Re: In theory...

You can't bore a 305 far enough. And why? for what it would cost you, you can get a 350 block. If you're having trouble finding one, just tell us.

No, they're not the same blocks. They're different castings.

Re: In theory...

To put a 3.750" stroke crank in a 305 block would require custom pistons, probably about $800. At that point, it's cheaper to just build a real 383.

No, they're available off the shelf.

Re: In theory...

oh... i just assumed they wouldn't be readily available. Seems like an odd combination, to put a 3.750" stroke crank in a 305 block.

Re: In theory...

at 30 over, you get a 334. but why bother?

Re: In theory...

You can also do it more cheaply with a standard run-of-the mill 305 piston if you use a 5.565" rod. Doesn't make it any less of a complete waste of time and effort, though.

Re: In theory...

If I recall correctly, the 305 block has water jackets close to the cylinders to dissipate heat, just like a 350 does, which is what limits how far you can bore an engine.

Just get a 350 block. A 1 piece roller block should run you $200 used. If you're not in a hurry, just wait. One will show up sooner or later.

All water-cooled blocks do.

Re: In theory...

3.75 stroke in a 305 makes a 334 when bored .030 over. Not a bad little motor, it has potential but not as much as a 383, atleast i havent seen ppl bulid a very stout 334, naturally aspirated. And i mean 11 second car as 383 with any good set of heads and a medium hyd.roller cam should be a 11 second car with a decent intake setup (ie not LTR TPI)
