Cam Question?

I'm pretty new to sbc performance, and the f-body in general. I would like to know if anyone can offer me a definitive answer to this question. If I install this cam will I have any valve to piston clearance issues on a 305 built before 1986 with stock bottom end and heads? as a side note, if all is well in that area, should I look at changing the valve springs? My plan is to install this combo package on the 305 in my Firebird. In addition to the things in that kit, I am already planning on putting new pushrods in and replacing all of the bolts i will be taking out to install all of this. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Not likely.

Wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: Cam Question?

you should have no problems with that cam, its almost identical to the factory L98 roller cam in lift and specs and that works great in 305's and i dont think the pistons changed from 86 to the 87up roller years. your still probly .025 in the hole and should have plenty of space with that setup.

My pistons are as close to the head as factory from my calcs and i got plenty of clearance with a 230/245 .600+ lift cam

Yes replace the valve springs but with any recommended flat tappet cam spring that will fit in stock pockets and most will Comp 981's i think are standard flat tappet springs that work well, even for mild roller cams so you should be good there.

replace pushrods too while your at it. Always a good choice.

That package should work well, i dont know a whole lot on carbs but for a 305 i know you dont want or need to go too large. you could actually jump up a cam size if you wanted

Re: Cam Question?

Your combo is very similar to a 305 I did years ago. Seems okay to me.

I'm not familiar with the L98, what is it?
