Engine Block Flush ?

In the process of replacing my head gaskets on my 85 Z28 I have almost everything off of the engine except for the passenger side exhaust manifold and head. Water pump radiator stuff like that is all out. Is there a way to get all the coolant and crap out of the engine block? can I just stick a garden house somewhere until clean water comes out instead of the oil/coolant mixture thats in it now or just wait until I get the whole thing back together then flush the system.

Re: Engine Block Flush ?

After the flush, add about a quart/liter of straight antifreeze before you fill it with your 50/50 or 60/40 coolant mix. That extra straight quart will offset the clean water that will remain in the engine after a flush.

A flush works fine with cold water, but if you can somehow do it with hot water, that works MUCH better. The hotter the better. It will break loose alot more stuff if you use hot water. Not possible for everyone though, and cold water will work almost as well.

Re: Engine Block Flush ?

i know at work up at freightliner when a truck gets fuel in the coolant from the injector cups leaking we end up putting cascade dish washing liquid formula into it run it till its hot and pop the plug, usually ends up dumping a bunch of rusty puke looking junk out, cleans the liners pretty well.

Re: Engine Block Flush ?

a good soapy flush can really clean blocked passages . it also does a good job on eng. cooling systems . all kidding aside , i have done this for many ,many years . the easy/simple solutions to cooling is often the best . get eng. hot , circulate soap ,flush , do it again , flush , make sure eng. gets a little warm/operating temps. before flushing . has worked for me . good luck .

Re: Engine Block Flush ?

I'd pull the block drain plugs and let the water flush through those. I pulled them on my '73 and '84 Trans Am a few years ago and I was surprised how much casting sand from when the blocks were made was still inside.

Re: Engine Block Flush ?

Thanks for all the responds. I am just going to pull the engine block out and buy a re-ring kit for it. Also I found out that my heads might be warped going to take them to a machine shop and find out I could do it myself but I have no tools. Also I was wondering how much would it be to port and polish my 305 heads/? Has anybody had this done before and is it worth it? I know it depends on the shop and how much work needs to be done to them.

Porting stock heads isn't worth the cost to pay someone else to do it.
