Remove Govt?
I'm wanting to remove my govt limiter. I have a 1989 Camaro RS 305 tbi E and I'm not so happy with the limiter they have applied. Wondering if theres a way to remove it?

Re: Remove Govt?
Your post is a bit confusing. Is it the 4200 rpm upshift you don't like, and want it to shift closer to 5000 rpm? Or is your engine unable to get to 6000 rpm in neutral? Which can damage the trans, by the way.
I no longer have it, but my last camaro was a '91 RS LO3/auto, all stock except for a shift kit.
Before I replaced the timing chain, it would pull 6200 rpm in first gear, and 4800 in second, if I held each gear. Left in OD, it upshifted at 4200 rpm.
The truck TBI engines did have an RPM limiter built into their distributors, but not camaros.
All TBI 305s came with no-flowing swirl-port heads. Your engine was rated to 170 HP @ 4000 rpm, and mine made the same RWHP at 4800 as it did at 4000, before I replaced the timing chain. A worn chain is like retarding the cam, it shifts the powerband higher in the rpm range.
Here's what you'll need to do to make it what you seem to want it to be, in no particular order:
better heads, at least the TPI 305 ones
Edelbrock TBI intake
Holley 670 cfm TB
Headers
3" catalytic converter
3" cat-back exhaust system
better cam, such as the LT1 cam
V6 governor for higher-rpm upshift points
better rear gears, such as 3.73:1

Re: Remove Govt?
if you are talking about top speed limiter you have to have a custom prom done to remove it.

Re: Remove Govt?
guys, there is NO rev limiter unless he has a truck distributor. As I said, I got mine up to 6200 rpm, where it is not making any power. the GM dealer confirmed my programming was stock, I confirmed the heads and cam when I did the timing chain.

Re: Remove Govt?
Wrong. There is a fuel cutoff rpm limit. It may be set stock on some to 10000. GM mechanics are not trained to get into the ECM. They're trained to replace parts not modify or fix.
I just brought up my 88 bin and found that there IS a fuel cutoff and re-start fuel rev-limit. It happens to be set to 10031.
The limiter is there. Whether it's being used or not can be debateable.

Re: Remove Govt?
Yes he more than likely talking about the speed limiter, and the only way to remove it is with a custom computer chip.
An off-the-shelf chip from Hypertech or JET will still have the 110 MPH limiter.

Disconnecting the VSS is a temporary thing. The computer needs to know the speed of the car for its fuel and spark calculations. You'll get an SES light without a working speedometer.
