Cant find needed intake/mod existing?

There is no such intake for what I need..(Vortec/spreadbore/performer RPM.) What does exist is a (vortec/spreadbore/performer). Does anyone think that I could work the performer a bit to come a somewhat closer in performance to the RPM? Im using a comp cam 268 kit that has .479/.480 lift. I feel that the performer isnt going to have the flow in the higher rpms that I need. I would like to make power up to about 6000 RPM. Any suggestions??? Thanks

Re: Cant find needed intake/mod existing?

You're right- there's a hole in everyone's product line there. Irked me that they make a Performer RPM QJet intake (which works very well, by the way!) but no air-gap version and no Vortec version.

You're going to have to make do with the base model Performer Vortec Qjet intake and live with the upper RPM restriction. They're officially rated for idle-5500 but I've spun them up a little over 6000 and they still work decent- it's not like shutting off a light switch at 5500.

You could try to cut the center divider down a little bit. IIRC the RPM Air Gaps have a divider thats cut down some. I've also heard of people doing this to Performer RPM's with good results.

Re: Cant find needed intake/mod existing?

Well my cam specs say that it makes power from like 1500-5800 rpm, so I guess I wont be going to far out of the intakes range.

Do you mean the center section that makes it dual plane? To make it a little more like a single plane? Anyone else heard of this or have any pics or links on doing this?

EDIT: After looking at the AIR GAP style manifolds I see that the center of the plane is notched. Is that what is meant by cutting down the divider? What should I use to do it? Die grinder? I want to keep the surface inside the intake rough right? If I can get enough room under the hood this mod would probably go good with the use of a spacer?

too me, this seems like a good aplication for a carb spacer and an adapter plate. they do make a Q-jet to squarebore adapter right?

Re: Cant find needed intake/mod existing?

You actually want the intake as smooth as possible.
That will let the air flow better. You probably won't feel a difference weather it is or not, so unless your a serious racer looking to make a few horses, it's not a problem.

There's always the option of getting your intake Extrude-Honed.

Not a good idea for a wet intake.

The difference between a Performer and Performer RPM isn't so much the flow capacity as it is the engine RPM tuning. Increasing the flow area of a Performer won't make it run like a Performer RPM. Cutting down the divider is a different question, and should be at least partially effective.

A Performer RPM with a spreadbore to squarebore adapter would be the simplest solution assuming adequate clearance for the air cleaner.
