rear main seal

I was just wondering if any harm would be done if i applied a small dab of rtv where the seal halves mate (not the bearing cap to block surfaces, the directions state you should apply rtv to the outside of the block recess, but doesnt say anything about the parting lines of the seal-I just worry about leaving it dry and having a leak. please clear this up for me, where should I put RTV, and where should I not

Re: rear main seal

It was my understanding that you were supposed to add sealant to the seal halves. I believe my manual told me to use an anaerobic sealant.

I always put RTV on the outside and the ends of both halves. I also offset the seams so they are not directly on parting line.

Re: rear main seal

okay, thanks guys,
I put the seal in tonight with some rtv around the outside and a bit on the halves, as well as offset the seal, so fingers crossed it will seal!
