Crankshaft Gear
I have the gears lined up dot to dot but I can not get the chain on. Is there any other way than a puller tool to get the gear off so I can fit the chain on?

Re: Crankshaft Gear
yeah just finished coffee cup no 1
dude rent the puller at the zone
put the lower gear on for sure
then put the chain around the cam pulley with it loose
then line up the button on the camshaft so that when you drape the chain under the crank pulley you can line up the hole in the detached cam gear
it will be tight but you want that.
DO NOT USE THE OLD GEARS

I am going to buy the lower gear I lost today. How do I put the gear on? Just push it on?

Re: Crankshaft Gear
the gear should be a pressed fit. you should really need an installation tool to push it all the way on. check your chain alignment with a straight edge placed against the crank and cam gear to make sure the bottom gear is pressed on all the way. good luck man.

Re: Crankshaft Gear
do it right and then you have a great since of accomplishment not to mention peace of mind
Re: Crankshaft Gear
First, the only gears in a standard SBC V-8 are on the camshaft and distributor. The camshaft drive uses a chain and sprockets.
Second, the crank sprocket is keyed to the crank. Removing it will gain nothing, since it will have to go back in exactly the same position that it is currently.
Finally, since the sprockets are already in the correct positions (dot-to-dot), remove the cam sprocket withou moving the cam. Assemble the chain to the cam sprocket, hook the chain over the crank sprocket, then install the cam sprocket to the cam.
