1988 trans am gta

i got a 1988 trans am gta. when us tart it it runs rough. u have to keep it at about 1500 rpm for about 5 secs then it runs good. i have this plug that looks like a injecter plug but i loked around and i didn't see any place to plug it in. all the injecter plugs are pluged in. somebody said it was a cold start injecter .. it would be nice if somebody had a pic of exactly where it goes. i looked around for a good 5 mins but i didn't see anything.
on top of the pgug it says 59... dont know if that helps anything or not.

any help with this would be nice lol.. thx

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well deffinetly sounds like a cold start injector issue. The cold start injector provides an extra burst of fuel for the first 5 seconds when the car is started cold. The cold start injector is located between the 4 intake runners i believe on the left side of the motor (drivers side) i cant quite remeber now.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

lol well unfortunelt my scanner broke like 3 days ago lol. I found 2 pics online though one that circles the location of the cold start injectorunfortunetly they removed the cold start injector so you cant see what it looks like and another of the cold start injector in the motor but its so close up you cant really see where its located relative to everything else. So between the two of them i basically have one crappy picture lol.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well is this the original factory unmolested motor? You see 89 and later TPI motors did not use a cold start injector instead they used a wider PWM signal to the injectors on start up. So if someone swapped motors or installed the TPI system with mixmatched parts its possable that the cars just running the best it can lol. Tell ya what check the suffix code on the block that will tell you what the motor originally came from if its not original. Do you even have a plugged up port where the cold start injector would be? Maby it broke and someone just removed it and plugged it.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well first lets figure out what the deal is if the cold start injector is just plugged getting a new cold start injector and installing it will fix things. If for some reason we discover you have an 89 or later intake on your motor with 88 and earlier electronics we can fix that too but again lets figure out what the story with it is first.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well most notably the lack of a cold start injector lol. Only the 85-88 TPI motors used a cold start injector intakes.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Yea so if its not an 85-88 intake it wont have any port drilled or anything it will just be smooth. You can also look at the suffix code and see what year car that motor came out of if its been swapped at some point in the past.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well if its just an 85-88 intake and someone just plugged the port then no big deal just get a new injector and youll be on your way. If its not the 85-88 intake things will be alittle more interesting. Fixable no doubt but a bit more costly.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well no worries then. Just get a new cold start injector, plum it into the fuel rail and your all set.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Well if you believe that you do in fact have the no cold start valve intake youve got 2 options.

1. Swap for a manifold that does have the cold start intake

2. Swap to a EPROM from an 89 camaro with a motor of the same displacement and style that does not use the cold start valve

Re: 1988 trans am gta

Re: 1988 trans am gta

The EPROM is just the ECM's chip that really defins how things are going to work. You could also just get the ECM for an 89 camaro but its really the same difference in the end. Back fireing could be timing related but there are other things as well but a good place to start is timing.

Re: 1988 trans am gta

he can't use the prom from an 89..... VATS. you may fix one problem, but you will create another. i think i have an intake from an 88 with the csi port and the fuel rails to go with it, i will have to look, if you are interested, i may pull it for you.
