provision for mechanical fuel pump

had a question about putting mechanical fuel pump on 305 TPI out of 89 trans am. Looks like there is a cover plate to where it would go but does the cam has the lobe to drive the pump?

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

I thought that you couldn't operate a TPI on a mechanical fuel pump for lack of adequate pressure.

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

There should be like a 5-7 inch piece of hardened steel that pushes up into the engine, you can keep it up with grease, then slide the pump in and It should work, But this was for a carbed 305, so idk if tpi would be a different pump

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

you should be able to use a mech pump on that block if it has a cover plate. However, I don't remember if the tpi cam has a pump lobe or not

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

If your pump in the tank is still working, then all you need is to get a proper regulator for carbs and you are done, Otherwise you will have to get another sender/fuel intake assembly, drop the tank and plumb it up. Is the in-tank pump working? If you get a regulator, make sure it is a "Bypass regulator".

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

motor is temperely going into a different vehicle with carb setup and no electric fuel pump. The block does have the block off plate, so the block can support mechanical pump but i wasn't sure if the original cam would have the lobe to support mechanical pump.

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

NO, TPI roller cam does not have cam lobe.

Buy a basic summit electric in line pump for $150 or whatever it is. They are louder than SIN though.
Recommend looking into an aftermarket, more agressive, roller cam, with fuel pump lobe.

Yes, what he said, especially if it is temporary.

Re: provision for mechanical fuel pump

Not sure what year they stopped putting a fuel pump lobe on the factory cams. I have an 87 L98 cam and it definitely DOES have a fuel pump lobe. Got one out of a 92 and it definitely does NOT have a fuel pump lobe.

You're right in the middle, so I'd definitely check for yourself.
