i am looking at a fiero
I am looking at two Fieros that a guy is selling for a $1000 one is a 86 with a 4 cyl and the other which is a parts car is a 84 with a 4 cyl with no title both have cracked windsheald the parts one has an auto and the 86 has a 5 speed. He has an extra 5 speed to go with it the good one needs paint but is rust free with a sunroof all is there but he replaced the slave cylender and cracked the hose for it so the cluch dont disengage when u press in the cluch but it runs. I was wondering how reliable is 1986 as a daily driver and how hard is it to replace that hose

What does that have to do with third gens? We're not fiero owners.

Fiero's are great for suicide
Upon Impact the rear tends to engulf in flames
Right down the street from my house one hit a tree "front on"
Rear end blew up, fried the car and tree,
Guess its a Manufacturer recall.

The fieros had a great many issues, among them electrical fires in the engine bay. As cool as they look and all, there's a reason they only made them for what... 4 years?

Re: i am looking at a fiero
I drove two of them a few years back, wanted something small and quick, small it was, quick it wasnt. Drove the 4 cyl 5speed and the 6 cyl 5 speed. 6 cyl was quick, but not really, rather have the 305, at leest I wont burn to death maybe X

Yeah, I've heard that with careful application of the BFH you can squeeze an SBC into the engine bay. I'd slap a 350 into it.

Re: i am looking at a fiero
Local racers has a blown 350 SBC in one. He built a hand fabricated transfer case gear system to feed an Eldorado transaxle. With a mild tune, it runs high 9's. The factory type of belt or chain transaxle systems kept breaking including the factory style Eldorado and Toronado systems.

As a daily driver, wouldn't recommend.
As a weekend project car, they can be fun. There are whole communities of Fiero fans to help you out.
My brother has built up quite a few. Currently he has a modified 86 that he installed a stock 3.4L Twin Dual Cam V6 out of a later Chevy Lumina Z34 (same engine family as the original 2.8 pushrod motor, but definitely not a bolt-in). It goes mid 13s on motor and dips into the 12s on a 50 shot. It's really built for autocross racing. Regularly stomps 800HP Vipers on the autocross course. You would need a high buck supercar to equal it's turning ability. You move the wheel and it changes directions RIGHT NOW.

These guys exaggerate the Fiero's issues. You should look at www.realfierotech.com and www.fiero.nl

Re: i am looking at a fiero
While my Camaro was getting its initial restoration performed, I bought an 86 silver 4cyl Fiero with a 5 sp. Only power brakes. The radio sucked, the brakes were not vented front or rear which was a nightmare, fuel consumption really sucked. Heater was out so got my heat mainly from the engine behind me. So it was a fun litle car to have for a short time. If you really want a fiero, get the final year models. 1988. Better brakes, suspension etc.

Impact has nothing to do with fires. Infact only the 84's had problems and ALL 17 reported engine fires were from a thrown rod spraying oil on the exhaust. An extra shield was installed for later models and problems went away
Front impact... Have you ever looked under the hood? Its got headlights and a spare tire, that's it
Nothing to fry, no fires to start, nothing
The gas tank is in the "trans" tunnel so there's really no possible way you can do that short of an explosive in there

Re: i am looking at a fiero
Yea dude, the front impact slides the engine toward the front of the car, snapping fuel lines, shitty placement of wiring harness's, collapsing cooling systems, should do your research before saying my information is a pile of gross misinformation, instead of using wikipedia and try to burn someone. Its wiki pedia dawg, its made by ppl like you.
You blew a rod because you ran low on oil, thats your fault.
And yes ive looked under the trunk *cough* hood
Your information is 1/10th right. They did have fires from thrown rods, over 100 of them, but that was not the cause of deadly fires.

Re: i am looking at a fiero
I currently have an '84 Fiero I bought 3 years ago, with only 42K mles on it. Cost me $1200, but came with all service receipts. I drove it daily, without issues, the entire summer. Come winter, I took out the 4 cylinder, and swapped in a 3.1L V6 I had. Better, but not enough. I had wanted a V8 Fiero for years, ever since I first learned about V8Archie. But the guy isn't getting any good words from me. So now, with the help from the guys on the forums, I'm installing an LS4 V8, and the G6 GT 6-speed.

I hope we aren't hijacking this thread, but I already have 2 LM7s, for my Camaro and my TransAm.
