350 or 305
350 or 305
Hey guys,
I am looking into buying another third gen...86 IROC with a 5-speed. I am pretty sure the 350 was an option in 86 but regardless the owner claims it is a 350, but how do I tell? It looks a lot like my 85 305. Any help.....

first off the 350 came out in 87. Can't come with a 5 speed or T tops. Second a 305 and 350 look identical cause the blocks are the exact same size on the outside and everything can swap between them. You have to get the codes on the motor to tell if its a 350.

As David mentions. Claiming that a car is equipped with a 350 is like claiming the car is an IROC: Those claims make the car more desirable. Don't bite on this one. Check the following link for more info about the 350:

Yea everone claims there v8 camaro has a 350. In 86 a few prototype 350s bere built but supposedly they were all destroyed. Now its possable that it has a 350 swapped in it but for that you would need to look at casting numbers or suffix codes.

Re: 350 or 305
Well you are right the build year and the modle year are different but again if its an 86 modle year then its an 86 reguardless of when it was actually built but thats will be noted in the VIN number. There are 2 numbers you could look for. 1 the suffix code which will be on the passanger side of the motor where the head meets the block or the casting numbers which will be on the back top side of the motor's flange that bolts to the trans. Unfortunetly i dont have and good pictures of locations but you should be able to search online and find some good pictures.
