Oil Pressure/Oil Leak

Just picked up my new 89 IROC and I have a few questions that I was hoping could be answered here. I noticed that there is oil leaking steadily from where the trans meets the engine block. My initial thought is that the rear main seal is to blame. Next, when I spoke to a friend he thought the culprit may be the oil pressure switch which he stated is a pretty common problem with these motors. When the car is at highway speed oil pressure is displayed at 60 and at idle around 30 so I did not think there was a problem with the switch. Any ideas or tips would be appreciated and is the rear main seal a job I should leave to someone who has a lift?

Re: Oil Pressure/Oil Leak

You should be able to see the oil pressure sensor from up top. It's on the bottom left side of the dizzy. Check that before you put a rear main seal in it.

Re: Oil Pressure/Oil Leak

'89 IROC should have the oil pressure sensor above the oil filter. The sensor at the back of the engine next to the distributor was on older cars.

If its not the rear main, it could be the seal between the bottom of the intake and top of the engine block. I would pull the torque converter inspection cover and take a look inside.

Re: Oil Pressure/Oil Leak

Thanks for the info guys, if it ends up being the rear main is that something I should leave up to the pros?

Re: Oil Pressure/Oil Leak

You need to pull the transmission. After that theres not much else to it. If you have the tools and are comfortable pulling the trans you could do it.
