Timing Problem.
Alright guys heres the problem a few months back my stepdad told me to turn the distributor on my car to advance the timing some since the car was stalling. Well as i thought it was stalling do to a cracked CAT and a non functioning pcv valve, but now my timing is way off. I took the car to the neighbor and he did it the old school way just little turns and listen, but it still don't run like it did when i got it, so i need some help here.
I plan on buying a light this weekend to do it right. Now i've read on here something about an est needing to be disconnected first, Where is this located at??? The car has a 350 TPI with a good sized cam so what is a good starting point for my timing as far as advance??? Do i do this with a warm engine or cold or does it matter??? Is there a set rpm the engine needs to be at to set initial timing?? If anyone has pics of the procedure it would be a great help.

Re: Timing Problem.
Do not time by ear....only very very experienced old school people can get it close....get a light for sure.... There is a little single wire connector by the a/c condensor/fan motor area on the passenger side of engine compartment....follow the wiring harness on that side and you should find it, more towards the firewall...it's coming out of a larger harness....I believe the wire is brown. Disconnect this wire, then go and start car....watch dash to make sure check engine light comes on, and your idle speed should be near normal (timing can affect idle speed too), check timing and adjust. I believe the the factory setting is 0 degrees...start there....you might get a little more power advancing it 4 degrees or so. What size cam do you have?? what make and part number?? are you running a stock computer and what other mods?? If the cam is too big the chip may need tuned.

Re: Timing Problem.
^^^^What he said, except the stock timing on a 350 tpi should be 6* before.

Re: Timing Problem.
Well in response to cam size and so on i don't honestly know. The guy i boughht the car from told me his brother did the engine swap and mod when he had the car after blowing the original 305. He thinks his brother got the engine from a 91 vette though. The car ran like a dream when i got it.
I found a brown wire with a black stripe by the ac box, disconnected as stated and no check engine light but now my tack is acting all weird and jumping around in like 750 rpm intervals but i don't here that large of a change in the engine. Is this the correct wire??? Please help

Alright i found a pic of the est connector and it is the one i disconnected yesterday so why no check engine light???? And i couldn't tell a bit of difference in how the car ran with it connected or not connected. I'm confused.LINK: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...-location.html
Just like mine.
