What head gasket to use?

I have to rebiuld a Chevy engine. The block has cracked due to freezing over last Winter (I think). I have completely disassembled the engine. I plan on purchasing the ZZ4 block (P/N NAL-10105123) and reuse as much of the original engine as possible.

The ZZ4 is an iron block as well as the cylinder heads (GM 14096217). The old cyl head gaskets are all metal (SS I think). They measure bore 4.125" and the gauge is 0.015" to 0.020". I have always used the Felpro 1010 head gaskets, but that was for an iron block and aluminum heads.

What is my best choice for the ZZ4 block and these iron heads?

1010's would work just fine.

The Felpro composite gaskets will work fine. If you want to bump the compression slightly, a factory style metal shim head gasket will work.

They're expensive but they'll be the last head gasket you'll ever buy because they're reusable. Get some Cometic head gaskets or Felpro MLS gaskets.

149.00 a set for gaskets is very high. and fel-pro is 40.00 each. that is some money - but well spent.

Re: What head gasket to use?

Thank you for the responses. Yea, I think $40 a piece is plenty pricy for me and this particular motor.
