Well I live in Dubai and it is the summer now. So it is hotter than hell. Also my air conditioning crapped out just in time. Does anyone know how to charge it? I have a 1991 Camaro RS with a 350 swap.

 

Can you get R12 refrigerant there? If not, you'll need to convert it.

 

If it needs a charge then there's a leak somewhere. Putting more freon into the system without fixing the leak is a waste of money.

You need a charge station with freon gauges, a vaccum pump and a bottle of nitrogen to properly test and refill the system.

R12 is a banned refrigerant. If you can even find someone who has some and is willing to sell it, it's around $500 and ounce and a car usually uses around 2 pounds of freon.

If your car uses R12, it will need to be changed over to R134A or some other newer style refrigerant as even R134A is being phased out.

 

$500/ounce? that a typo? most shops sell it for $5/ounce. its not banned, it just can't be manufactured anymore and if there is some left over stock out there, you need your refrigeration license to buy it. but converting to r134a is the cheapest route.

 

I'd agree with that. They sell kits that are designed specifically for the do-it-yourself guys. Not hard to do at all and not very expensive. Certainly not the equal of a professional A/C job, but you're likely to get good results if you follow directions.

Best part is that if you have a "slow leaker", like many of my cars are, you chuck another can of 134a into them once or twice a summer for a recharge and it costs only a few bucks a can.
