Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

Had Lloyd Elliot Custom grind a cam for me that peaked around 6000rpms and would make around 400rwhp. With my old xr276hr cam i put out around 330rwhp @ 5300 and 340rwtq.

New dyno showed before 217 rwhp @ 4600 rpms and 240 rwtq @4600 rpms.

Now the car has to be revved to about 1500-1700 rpms to stay started. It shut off on the drive home from the dyno place too. I am getting very very disappointed with this car and i have no idea what could be wrong. Injectors were 30lbs Ford Motorsport and new ones are 36lbs. Retainers, springs ect were also replaced when cam was installed. Ideas fellas?

Re: Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

If I understand you correctly, you have a 350 bored 40 and stroked to a 385, you have AFR 195cc heads, and an unmodified HSR. I assume headers and single 3" exhaust. You decided the cam was the next step. If I have it correctly, then I suggest you reinstall the XE276HR, have the HSR Extrude-honed, and contact Mufflex for one of their 3.5" exhaust systems. Also, if your headers are 1.625", you've reached the point of needing 1.75", such as SLP for shorties or Hooker SuperComps for long tubes. That still won't get you to your goal, so did you get thr 276 with 110 lobe sep, or the 276 with 112? If you got the 110, I suggest moving up to a custom ground 282 on a 112. If you got the 112, I suggest a 282 on a 114. This should get you really close to your goal.

So instead of finding out the problem, you say get rid of the custom cam?

Re: Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

There's a lot of things that could be wrong. Is the timing set right on the gears, maybe off a tooth. How about ecm programmed for the different cam.

There's a big difference between rookie porting and Extrude Honing.

Re: Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

Obviously its a tune port only with a hsr which means it have an ecm, my question to u is that, are u running a stock ecm with a stock prom? if so you're in the same situation im in only im getting mine tuned or for our cars a chip installed. if u dont have something done to your ecm to upgrade it then you're choking your motor and the stock settings are being put to your wheels instead of your 383

Re: Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

What are the specifications on the new cam? When you had it dynoed did you get a printout of the AFR, it could be that your tune is way off. What I find strange is that HP and tq both peaked at 4600 RPM, did you stop the pull? Typically the HP will peak 1000 RPM higher then the torque.

I believe you have some sort of mechanical/electrical issue that is causing your problems (coil bind, computer issue). You should not have lost that much power with just a cam change.

well there is your problem right there...its obviously a tuning issue then. Re burn the tune to another chip and see if that fixes it. If not check and make sure all your connections are good and clean.

Re: Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

You wouldn't've lost 100 rwhp from a cam with the tune you had if the guy had any clue how to spec a cam for injection. He probably added quite a bit of overlap, which you really neither need nor want. No more than 10 degrees at 0.050" for injection, but if you went carbureted, you'd do better with 16-20 degrees at 0.050". By sticking to this guideline, I've never had an unhappy customer with a 3.750"-stroke-SBC.

Re: Dyno Disappointment and wont stay started

I dont want to give the specs out on my cam, bc Lloyd is tight lipped about the cam, however, i can say that it isnt more than 10 degrees overlap.

Lloyd is pretty good....alot of guys are running his cams

Edit: Could a rocker arm (or arms) out of adjustment cause the lack of power and peaking at such a low RPM?
