1983 Recaro T/A Speedo NOT working...

I have an 83 Recaro T/A w/ a 5 speed and I can get the speedo to work, but for only a short time. I have taken it apart at the dash and down at the trans. I have made sure the cable housing is in tight to the metal part that snaps in back of the dash, the gear down at the trans turns fine. It seems like if I get the cable in the right spot, in the trans gear and in the dash, its works for a while, but it seems like the cable must slide down into the trans to much and it comes out of the dash. The cable down at the trans when its disconnected, can move in / out of the housing about 1 inch. Dont know if its normal or Am I missing a part somewhere? wrong size cable? anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks Ray

How deep is the square hole in the gear going into the trans? If it's too deep, try breaking some wooden toothpics, so the cable cant slide in TOO far. It needs about 3/8" of engagement, no more.

You don't have cruise control right?

I have cruise control, but no, it doesnt work either. I had the speedo working when I went down to the third gen fest this year, but the cruise didnt work then either.

Check the following link for more info:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...eedo-woes.html

When you reassembled, did you make sure the clip that holds the cable at the cluster was in place?

If you have cruise, you probably have a two-piece type cable: one cable to the transducer, one to the trans. Either cable could be faulty. The transducer is probably shot, which would explain the non-functioning cruise.

Hey James, yes the clip is in place that holds the cable to the back of the cluster, however I do only have a single cable system, out of the cluster and right down to the trans.

oh ok, you've bypassed your cruise control. I was going to say your transducer is probably shot.
Pull the cable out of the tranny and chuck it up in your drill. Make sure you can spin the speedo correctly with it.

Re: 1983 Recaro T/A Speedo NOT working...

I did check it on both ends of the cable, the trans side: the gear spins fine, and on the dash side it moves the speedo also when I spin the cable. I never by passed the cruise, unless a previous ower might have, where is that transducer? I think this is more like the cable is to short or missing something somewhere??? I can get it working when I get the cable positioned correctly, then after a few miles, it stops working. I think the cable is sliding down into the trans gear and then not making the connection at the dash.

Re: 1983 Recaro T/A Speedo NOT working...

I figured you could notice if the cable into the trans gear was protruding more than when previously reassembled it, so I skipped all these other parts and went straight to a workable bandaid for what you said you observed.

Re: 1983 Recaro T/A Speedo NOT working...

The transducer is near your brake booster. It's just forward of that, on the frame rail.
Your speedo cable should go from tranny, to transducer, to speedo. If it's not going into the transducer, that's why the CC isn't working

If you pull the cable out of the tranny, and can spin it in your hand and it DOES spin the speedo, but works intermittently when driving, you're right, the length might be off.

Mine did that, as I had to remove my transducer since it wasn't working, and ever after had a hell of a time getting it to work.

I now have a working one. I bought a new cable off rock auto ($5 believe it or not), since the one from the wreckers was questionable.

Re: 1983 Recaro T/A Speedo NOT working...

yep, found the tranducer, and nope, its not hooked up... I do just have the cable from the trans to the back of the dash, and knowing that now, I wonder if the cable in it now is even the correct length. Do you know if the cable is the same length in a 5 speed as in an automatic trans? Not sure what the previous owner had done, I have had this car for just under a year and a half and still have many things I would like to do to it.
