ok,got a 92 rs 5-speed 305 v8.
car sat for awhile when i bought it.
i drove it 130 miles home no troubles.

i was getting tags on car and when i went to hit 2nd. gear i broke traction just a little.
a few minutes later car sounded funny like a older model v8 would with a bad condenser.
it poped and spit and sounded like it was loaded up real bad.
it just would not clear up.
i stopped it for a few to look it over.
i crank it back and it cuts off.
crank it,cuts off.
crank it cuts off,several times.
i hauled it to my friends on rollback.
when i unloaded it i tried to crank it.
it fired right up but wasn't to par.
pulled in garage and it would set there and idle fine and almost cut off,
fast,slow,fast,slow.
put on lift to change fuel filter.
it was nasty.
put on filter and it still idle good,then low,good,then low.
we took the little wired plug on passenger side front of throttle body and pulled it out of the sensor.
it idled way up but it stayed at that speed.
took the sensor out and cleaned it a little.
put sensor(idle sensor??)back on and plug wire back in.
it seems to idle great now,but it will not go up the highway under power.
it idles good but you can't give it any gas and go.

anyone got any clue?
could that sensor need replaced?
could converter be stopped up?
it has exhaust going thru it?

please help??

here is a quick run down of my problem.

1=car was spitting,popping.
2=then car would crank,cut off,crank,cut off.
3=changed fuel filter that was dirty.
4=idle high,low,high,low,etc...
5=unplugged little thing on pass side front of tbi,it idles up but smooth.
6=plug back in starts idle good,low,good,low.
7=take sensor loose and clean a little put back on.
8=seems to idle lots better.
9=start to go up highway and car won't take gas.
10=pull back in garage car idles fine,just won't run under pull.

anyone got a clue??

OK - the 'carb' is not a carb if this car is stock - if it has an air cleaner on top like an old carb car, it's a Throtle Body Injection unit (a TBI). It looks like a carb, but has two injectors inside that spray fuel into the body.

The 'little thing on side of carb' - we need more info - is it on driver or pass side, is it towards front or rear, what color wires run to it, and how many wires? This 'little thing' could be the Idle Air Control valve (IAC), the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), or several other gadgets - we need to know what it is.

In the meantime,

1) Check wires, make sure all plug wires are seated securely on the plugs and the distributor. Check the firing order (I know, just recheck it).

2) Check output from fuel injectors - they should spray a nice cone shaped spray into the throttle body - watch them at idle and while slowly accellerating, they should remain in a nice cone shape and spray louder during accelleration ... BUT WATCH YOUR FACE!!! If it's 'popping' then that means it's backfiring, and you could loose an eyelash, mustache, nosehair, eyebrow, or other vital organ!

3) check for a check engine light - if it's lit when car is running, then you need to pull the codes - read here:

4) replace fuel filter - it's located just in front of the driver rear tire, on the framerail - you'll have to jack rear of car up to see it - about the size of a beer can with a fuel line in one end, and out the other - make sure you replace new one in right direction so fuel flows properly (arrow points towards front of car).

That'll get you a place to start.

Hey jdracing, just wondering if u figured out the problem because I seem to have the same thing going on. Only mine started doing this after degreasing the engine compartment. I thought moisture issue but can't trace the ghost anywhere.

 

spartikas,yes i did get the problem fixed.
it turned out to be the fuel pump believe it or not.
i did do these 3 things to if you want to do the same.

1=I replaced the inline filter at the tank. (mine was awfully dirty).

2=I replaced the idle sensor ?(on the passenger side front end of throttle body.) it has 2 phillip screws i think,and it has a round plug that you unplug before you remove,and plug back in after replacing.(If you need the exact name of the part I can find the box and get it for you?) I think
I described it's location as best can be described though.

3=I replaced the fuel pump(got one with lifetime warranty from advance auto for 56.00)it was not as hard as i had been expecting to replace
either.

I got that problem fixed and put a flowmaster with duals out the back.
I got to listen to that sweet sound for about 15 minutes.
The first time I turned it off i cut the switch back to accessory side and it breaks.
I have no idea what has happened,but it is stuck on the acc. side and can twist the switch key,but nothing happens. It just stays on the radio side as if I would rather listen to the radio than that deep mellow tone of those v8 tailpipes just a humming that SWEET song.

 

sounds like the op rod popped out or the ignition switch.
check it out its located down on the coloum

 

Thanks for the reply jdracing. I'll check out the idle sensor. My fuel filter isn't that old but the car has sat awhile. I can hear the pump prime when I turn on the switch but I'll check.
