Engine Oil / Transmission Cooler

Hello Everyone,

After years of work my restoration is nearly complete. To protect my project, I am going to buy an engine oil cooler and transmission cooler. I also have a remote "spin type" filter for my transmission. Does anyone have a reccomendation of oil cooler / tranny cooler? If I install both a tranny cooler in addition to the radiator and the remote filter, will I have a problem with flow restriction?

Below is a link to the unit I am thinking of purchasing. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

That tranny cooler looks really good to me. You shouldnt have any problems with flow restriction,as long as you replace your filters regularly.

Re: Engine Oil / Transmission Cooler

i would get a by-pass kit it cools and cleans the oil better i have one and the oil is still good after 5 months and 11334 miles
as for the trans kit remember too cold is just as bad as too hot i have the trans to the aftermarket cooler then the stock one then back to the trans

transmission and oil temp gauges are always good just so you know whats going on

Re: Engine Oil / Transmission Cooler

Why do you think you need a ext oil cooler?

If you do install get one with a inbuilt thermostat so oil warms up first before being passed to cooler otherwise oil temps will be too cold leading to increased engine wear

Re: Engine Oil / Transmission Cooler

After searching it seems most people either recommend or have an oil cooler from the factory. My car does not, so I figured an external one would be good. The one is the link I provided bypasses the cooler until oil temperature hits 180.

Even so water boils at 212 ; you want to run 200 or better to boil off the water and contaminants from the oil otherwise you get sludge build up.Most users of oil coolers are beating on their engines hard like on road courses.
The Vette LT1's went to Mobil 1 and deleted the oil cooler previously fitted to the L98's which was only a option , not std fitment

Re: Engine Oil / Transmission Cooler

Basically you are telling me an oil cooler is a waste and even harmful. Unless I am beating my car badly. This car is going to be a weekend warrior with little strip time. I just want to do what's best for overall HP and durability.

I always run full synthetic in all of my cars.

Re: Engine Oil / Transmission Cooler

If you are really worried you could run the Vette L98 oil cooler that fits between the block and oil filter ( if it fits F-Body chassis ).Has two coolant lines running to it
Typically lowers oil temps 15 -20 ( closer to coolant temp)

Often for sale on eBay or Corvette Forum
