Im building a mild vortec 305 for my 85 camaro, and would like to fab up a crankcase vacuum system, i have heard that for this ford smog pumps are better than chevy ones? is this true? or if the ford pump is better would i have to make the brackets for it? (which at that point i would just pick the chevy on i think, unless it considerably better)
im just looking for around 7in of vacuum, any help is appreciated!

Not sure why you think you need it but some use the LT1 elec vac pump.Mount anywhere

The LT1 pump doesn't flow enough air. The late model 2000ish electric smog pumps are a little better. They can be found of some GM and Fords. Although the pumps are the same, how they're mounted and the power plugs are different.

The Ford belt driven pumps are what the GZ Motorsports pumps are based on. http://www.gzmotorsports.com/ I have one but still haven't installed it yet. The only place I can put it is where the alternator currently is. I either need to reposition, change to a smaller one or remove the alternator completely. I still haven't decided what to do. Until then, I'll still use the late model electric pump. Although it can't pull enough air at WOT, it still removes condensation after the engine is shut off. After ever run, I drain a little water out of the puke tank. It keeps water and alcohol contamination out of the oil. After a season of racing, my oil is still clean.

Using a factory smog pump is tricky. They don't like moisture and the pump will pull condensation from the crankcase. You need to put a puke tank between the crankcase and the pump so most of the moisture is removed before it gets to the pump and seizes it up.

The Ford pump comes in many different variations. The nice part about it is there's an inlet and outlet port. You just need to find one where the ports will be clocked in the proper location when you install it.

The GM pump has the inlet behind the pulley. You need to do a bunch of modifications to plug off that location and drill/tap a new inlet port so it's not as easy to use as the Ford pump.

 

what vehicles would have the electric you refer to?

 

S10, Lincoln Continentals, Cobras, G vans plus a few others. Not all have them because it depends what engine is in the vehicle and the specific year. I think they started using them in the late 1990's and may still use this design on the newest vehicles. They're not mounted on the engine. They're usually inside the fender.

You want one of this style.



Not one of these LT1 pumps that are mounted on the front of the engine.



The same internal modifications are required such as removing the foam etc. The late models pumps are a better design and move a lot more air.

 

cool ill check those pumps out... what exactly is a puke can? is that like a catch canister that they sell with a breather on top of it?
i figured those went after the pump between the pump and back to the oil pan, if that is where the out lin goes to.
fast355 i believed used a late 80s ford truck smog pump that bolted in directly to his brackets,
and you use yours on you strip car right? would you consider this for a daily driver? or no?

With a vac pump ,the can goes between engine and pump to trap the oil / water before it gets to pump which is only designed to pump air.
A catch can is only a container open to the air through the breather to stop you getting oil all over your engine. Both types have a drain so you can empty them out

 

cool, well looking at the gzmotorsprts website, their kits only come with the breather tank after the pump... so those dont need the puke can with those kinds of pumps? or would you still say id need one?

 

The GZ pumps are designed to handle moisture. an OEM pump is not.
