v6 running weird help please!!!!

Hey guys I got a 89 camaro with a 2.8, my problam is at idle it back fires n the idle bounces, also sounds like a miss fire. I'm guessing it has a vaccum leak or the plug wires crossed some there. I was woundering if you guys cam steer me in the right way n if possable provide me with a vaccum diagram also whitch plug wire goes where. Thxs

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

By "bounces", do you mean the engine sounds like the idle is jumping around, or the tach needle drops when the engine seems to miss? If the latter, you might have an ignition control issue (i.e., not related to spark plugs or wires).

On the FAQ forum there is a thread with information about vacuum diagrams. Yours should be posted there.

Five7kid-It sounds like the motor revs then will goback down on idle, what do you mean by latter?

marekdennhardt- how do you do that, I know you turn the distribuater n I'm guessing you need a timming light.

Re: v6 running weird help please!!!!

You need a timing light. They aren't expensive ($30). Loosen distributor cap, unplug the single wire near the top of the passenger side firewall (brown and black stripe I think), clip timing light onto #1 cylinder wire (passenger front of engine), start car, set timing to 10 degrees btdc, turn car off, plug the wire in you unplugged on the firewall, take off timer, start car, test and rev, tighten cap. make sure you don't adjust it after timing by accident.

also check for vacuum leaks too, I found mine on the drivers side of the engine near the back, and on the top where three hoses connect at a "t".

Good luck

You'll probably need a timing chain too if you don't know when it was replaced last. My 2.8 had a really sloppy idle until I replaced it, they're really high wear parts and my manual says it needs to be replaced every 30k miles!
