Vin Issue

Hey Guys. So new to camaro but not to chevy/gm products.
I recently picked up an 86 camaro and had issues with the vin so i went
to the registries office.(Canadian) and ran the vin. it came out fine.
But i would like to know why when i tried to insure it i had so many issues.
I've done quite a bit of reasearch and have found it quite odd to have a letter in both the 2nd and 3rd vin postition.
In my case 2BG506103GL******.
It is a 17 digit vin and i cant quite figure it out.
I know its canadian and was built in CA but have no clue what BG is.
Any one else have any ideas?

Re: Vin Issue

For some reason was the VIN number changed? That VIN number doesn't follow the standard GM convention.

Re: Vin Issue

Probably not. In some circumstances, local government can issue a new vin for a car... Like if it's stolen and then recovered and rebuilt. Gm wouldn't be able to help because that's not a GM VIN number.

Re: Vin Issue

Interesting. I did notice on the Inside of the door a British Columbia Sticker with a Vin but no information for the car as to tire specs and such. Just a sticker. it is very likely that something of the sort has happened.

Re: Vin Issue

Take a look at this. You might also call your local DMV and see what they can tell you.

Re: Vin Issue

If it has a provincial sticker or plate with a VIN number on it than it's a reissue.

There are ways to find the original VIN on the car if you know where to look.

Re: Vin Issue

Isnt there a marking on the front radiator crossmember with the VIN? Maybe under the black radiator support piece?

Re: Vin Issue

Hello Junior F-body!!

The only reason that you found a BC sticker with a VIN, is because it was a stolen recovery, and after 30 days ICBC pays, therefore if it is found, they own the car, and so that there are no hassles with the original VIN showing up as a stolen car, they re-issue a VIN. Your dash VIN plate should be missing also!! California does the same thing, I seen it with my own eyes on a first gen 1969 Camaro!! On the 1987 Camaro's, all major body parts have a sticker with the original VIN, look for it on your 1986, you may find it!!
