Re-using old pickup tube on Oil Pump??.

Hi there..

Just a quick question here. I have amost rebuilt my 305 engine. Bought a rebuilding kit from federal mogul and with that kit came a high flow oil pump.

The pump didn't include any pickup, so I am wondering if I could just re-use my old one after some good cleaning of course??..

Or will it not flow good enough or what??..

You could, but a new pickup screen is cheap.

Either braze or tack it in place or expand the tube a little so that it sits tight in the pump, last thing you want is for it to rotate.

Ok..Then I think I would just re-use it though, because there are no places in Norway that sells pick-up tubes. So then I have to buy one from US wich is no problem at all but it would take a couple of weeks to get it here to Norway and I am in a little of a hurry to get my engine together so I can start on my next project.Rebuilding the transmission..

Ok..I think I would just use TIG and make a small "point" so I am sure they would stick together..

I reused mine when I did my build. I put some black high-temp RTV around it and tapped it in using an open end wrench and a hammer. It's been fine with no issues. I was afraid to tack it with a welder as I'd probably just burn through the metal.

Yeah I was thinking of that too..I pressed in the old pickup tube today at the oil pump and it was pretty stuck in there. But if I turned it hard I could twist it so therefor I used a TIG machine that we have at work and melted some metal down at a point so now it is locked and ready to be mounted.

And you set the height above the bottom of the pan correctly before you welded?

Didn't get any heat at all..the welding was done in about 5seconds so there was not any great heat at the iron..So the spring is the same colour with no damage at all
