Try to solve this one boys.

Ok got a 1989 Trans am with a 5.7/700r4 combo thats being a major PITA.

In drive or overdrive, you can mash the throttle yet the rps will only climb to about ~2600 SLOWLY and no higher.

However, if I manual put the car in first, itll rev/pull all the way up the tach, same as if I put it in 2nd. Once I bump it up into drive though, I get nothing over about 2600 rpms.

If I start out in drive and step on it, it will shift threw all the gears at pretty low speeds but itll never take off quick or go over 2600 rpms like I said.

Btw the car has brand new..

cap/rotor
plugs/plug wires
ignition coil
ignition module
ignition coil pick-up
fuel injectors

Yes the throttle is opening up 100% and the TPS is showing 4.5 volts at WOT, this is also supported by the fact the car runs by manually putting it in 1st and 2nd. WTF is up with my D and OD?

Re: Try to solve this one boys.

This sounds like a trans issue not an engine issue since it doesn't do it in all gears.

I agree. Sounds like your 700r4 is due for a rebuild.

Agree one more time, sounds like the govenor in the trans is sticking, or maybe a sticking solenoid, either way, time to take that out and have a rebuild done on it.

Re: Try to solve this one boys.

I got a 700r4 that the OD went completely out in i can manually shift from first to second and it works fine but when i shift into D the engine whines up and i get no pull. I pulled the governer and it was fine no missing splines.

Its just those trans I suspect I stick with TH350's in everything I build

Thats the thing though, the engine isn't even whining up when I floor the gas in D or OD. Ever if I floor it and hold it there it only goes up to about the 2600 and slowly picks up speed from there. Its the weirdest thing i would think if D or OD was busted the motor would still be able to rev up just not hardly go anywhere?, and supposedly the PO had just got the trans rebuilt not long before I bought it.

Re: Try to solve this one boys.

well, if the car is in third or fourth gear it will bog the motor and feel slow. you said it works good in first or second because the itt's in the correct gear. If it's staying in third or overdrive it won't rev up because of the gear it's in.....still sounds like a trans problem....take it to a trans shop and have them look at it....they'll be able to tell ya and should maybe diagnose it for free, some shops do.

Re: Try to solve this one boys.

If the engine idles well and doesn't sound like it has problems and will rev up in park then I agree I think it is the trans not shifting right check your linkage 700r4's have the adjustable cable near the carb the teeth that held mine in place stripped out and it wouldn't hold the cable where i needed it. I would adjust it over and over again if that doesnt work diesel fuel and matches will take care of the problem.
