none of the above. timing needs to be close to perfect for the engine to start easily. highly advanced timing will make the engine lock when starting.

Mine just cranks for a min until it starts...everything else is good just take a little longer...My timing is set at 10* at idle (800 rpms.)

I'm not flooding out the engine, I just give it a little tap on the gas while cranking or it wont start at all...I also dont have a choke but shouldn't need it for the temps i drive in. My fiancee gets worried when it doesn't start right up like her little Pontiac Vibe.

Could having stock starter with 11:1 compression be the culprit?

That's exactly where a choke shows its stuff. Reduced airflow and slightly richer mixture.

Try giving it a pump or two before even turning the key.

That's where you're wrong. A carb properly tuned for operating temperature won't start worth a hoot when cold without a choke.

not really

He just needs to pump the gas once or twice and start it..Maybe have to keep his foot on the gas for a few seconds but thats it.
