help me change my spark plugs

I want to change my own plugs. If anybody could share thier experience changing plugs ,I could use the help. Did you put the car on ramps and get them from the bottom? Or access them from the top?,etc. Any details would be appreciated. My car is a stock 87 TA 305TPI

Re: help me change my spark plugs

looking down it seems pretty tight. also people keep scaring me saying if the plug breaks you are hit. I know the ceramic could break but would that mean I could not get it out ? Thanks for your response

Re: help me change my spark plugs

If the ceramic part breaks you are still fine as long as nothing falls into the cylinder. To date, I've never had the ceramic part break in way that anything would fall into the cylinder, just sometimes the ceramic shaft will break. This is a rare occurrence though. You should be fine, just use some common sense.

Re: help me change my spark plugs

I had to change the plugs in my 5.7L GTA with A/C and air tubes and its not a fun job at all. I remember I did have to get at a few of them from the bottom. The air tubes stink...

from the top i change mine myself because i trust very few people when it comes to working on my car some of them you will need a 1/2" ext. some of them you wont get to with it so you might have to take it on and off just make sure your arms stay away from the heat shield it will cut your arm and not feel so great

Re: help me change my spark plugs

When I had stock manifolds, AC, smog and whatnot, I did most of them from the bottom.
I've got small hands and had issues going from the top.

Re: help me change my spark plugs

I have done mine several times (and I have Edelbrock TES headers) and it is a PITA. The last two rear plugs on the passenger side can be done by going UNDER the car and looking straight up by the starter. I have found that a cut-down spark plug socket (with a 3/4" open end) works the best. Just slip is over the plug and use a SHORTY 3/4" wrench. Trying to get into those tight spaces with sockets and extensions and swivels is VERY hard to maneuver with all the lines and hoses in the way.

Re: help me change my spark plugs

you can break the stalk entirely off and it wont cause you any grief. The section you need to remove from the cylinder heads is all metal.

If they are hard to remove try hitting them with some penetrant and letting it sit. If you have factory exhaust manifolds some of them may need to be removed from underneath the car. That being said none of them are impossible and you shouldn't have too much of a hard time.

Re: help me change my spark plugs

....not sure if you got this taken care of yet or not but heres a tip just in case... The ones on the passenger side is easier to reach from below... and added to the spark plug socket you can use an end wrench to turn the socket easier.. it really works and helped me out a lot, some people dont take full advantage of the hex end on the top of the socket! but Good Luck! hope I was able to help ya out!

Re: help me change my spark plugs

I did my plugs today while I was changing the wires and had to cut about 1/4" off of the socket to get it on 2 of the plugs with my Hooker Headers.
I used to have the SLP spark plug tool, basically a sparkplug socket that was cut down really short, but someone misplaced it.
