Re: Help me pick out a Cam kit for my '85 Trans Am!!

Cams are often one of the most mismatched parts for a lot of engines, and there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing one.

First and foremost, what do you want the car to do? Do you want it to have tons of torque on the bottom end and be a good street runner, or do you want more top end power for a little more track oriented application?

What style block do you have in the car? Is the block machined for a hydraulic roller cam, or does it use the flat tappet?

Do you have the stock torque converter?

What's your rear end gear ratio?

What's the approximate weight of the car?

What is your compression ratio?

What's your rocker arm ratio?

And one of the most important questions, what heads are on the engine? What size valves? What size valve springs? What size combustion chamber? Are they aluminum or iron?

These things all need to be taken in to consideration when selecting a camshaft for your application.
