My 89 has the tightest torque converter I've ever seen in a car. Same deal as your car, and sitting at a red light I often put it in neutral to let the engine idle smoother. Just the way they're built I suppose.

Re: 87 iroc burning rubber on its own!!

The idle for the TPI is computer controlled via the IAC valve on the throttle-body. It sounds like your IAC may be malfunctioning. It could possibly be other problems as well, such as a sticking throttle blade, a large vacuum leak, or a faulty sensor. Your IAC is the best bet to start troubleshooting though.

ok, so i'm pretty much the furthest from a mechanic as you can get.... Does this seem like a serious problem or do a lot of cars experince this? I have been having a lot of trouble with my car and just got it running again.. so i hope this isnt something too serious.

IAC problems are very common, and they are not serious. Hopefully, that's all it is.

There's some info here:
https://www.thirdgen.org/tpimod2

There are some example videos on youtube.

The IAC is fairly easy to remove and inspect.
The IAC and its port are often very dirty and sometimes respond well to a good cleaning. You can test the IAC while removed (but plugged into the harness) by having a friend turn the ignition key from off-to-on, and then off again. The pintile will move in and out.
