superram on a 305?
just wondering if the superram on stock 305 heads will make any impact with headers and a cam?? or do i need to switch heads to something like vortec??
thnx for the input

Re: superram on a 305?
Nope. Your best to stay with the TPI set up. The stock TPI was designed around a 305 engine. If you plan on going with a 350+ engine down the road, then the SR would be a nice upgrade. I doubt you will see any gains on a stock 305.
If I was planning heads, cam, headers, etc as you posted, I would most likely be building a larger engine. It might help a bit if the heads and cam were upgraded, but a larger set of runners might do the trick on a 305. SRs are not cheap.
Im not saying there is anything wrong with a 305, as some members have some fast ones, but thats just me.

Re: superram on a 305?
According to the computer sims I've done, a good high flowing intake would improve top end power provided the cam is large enough for the engine to function well at high revs. High revs being a max of 5500 that is. However, it's not something I'll recommend to anyone until I try it myself. I certainly wouldn't shell out for a Superram to try this, they're uber rare these days. I was gonna give this a go with a Holley Stealth Ram personally.

Re: superram on a 305?
well i figure if i have it all apart to do headers and a cam might as well throw the SR on.. i can get one for a decent price.. problem is i cant get a 350 around here so i figured i would upgrade the 305 and if i ever get ahold of a 350 i can just swap everything over so no harm no foul... just wondering what i would get for hp i have 215 now with superram..probably keep the 48 mm TB for now headers and full exhaust.... might wait on the cam for now since i have never changed one before

Yea, if you can grab one for a good price..DO IT!!! You will not loose any money on it down the road, if you decide to sell it.

Re: superram on a 305?
i thought that the intake being larger and the runners being far more ported it would bring in a bit more air. i assumed i would need to reprogram prom especially if i get the hooker headers i want and the magnaflow 3" cat back muffler setup i just ordered on there

At the top end you're correct, it will get more air into the engine. However, in the low to mid range you'll be giving up some power because the shorter runners won't pack as much air into the engine.

Re: superram on a 305?
Not exactly, it depends on how you drive and how you want your engine to perform. After a full exhaust there are no parts that are going to increase power straight across the board. Parts that work well in certain RPM ranges will perform poorly in others. As the say, you can't have your cake and eat it too. One of the wonderful things about the small block chevy is that there are parts for pretty much any setup you want.
If you want to ride everywhere on a massive wave of torque and never exceed 4000 rpms, the TPI intake is great. There is no intake you can buy for a small block that will deliver more low and mid range torque than a TPI. It is the undisputed torque king. Personally I love winding my engine to the far reaches of its rev band. My answer to the question "how many RPMs is enough?" is "just 500 more." So for me, the big intake is what I want because it'll pay dividends where I want it at the high rpms. The fact that the torque at 2000 rpms drops from 300 lb-ft to 250 lb-ft wouldn't bother me. 250 is about what my saab has now and it scoots along just fine in traffic despite weighing more than my camaro and needing to spool a turbo to get that torque.
So choose the parts that will get you where YOU want to go.

A SuperRam is intended for 383s, that's what it was designed for. If you want to spin your 305 to 6000 rpm, that's fine, but try an HSR instead.

Re: superram on a 305?
would it be more beneficial to just get heads then instead of the superram and just use the stock TPI system?

Re: superram on a 305?
You can swap up to a good used Vortec 350 cheaper than you can do the SuperRam.
The idea for the 1/4 mile is getting the highest average HP throughout the run. This means focusing on getting the most torque possible at whatever rpm the engine is at after the 1-2 upshift.
The 305 is not an engine for drag racing, or any competition. It's for cruising.

Strictly speaking the most area under the HP curve in the RPM range from the maximum RPMs to the lowest RPMs after a shift.
EDIT: Atilla beat be to it, same basic idea.

A new SuperRam runs nearly $1000. You can get AA Midwest to ship you a good used Vortec 350 longblock, with a guarantee, for under $800.
