Best way to change valve springs?
Best way to change valve springs?
I've got a 86 Firebird that I just lined my transmission out on and now I'm ready to change my valve springs. Its a LG4 with a XE 268 cam and I've got the valvesprings that match it. What would be the easiest way to change them? Or do I really need to change them?
Thanks

yes you need to change the springs, lifters and timing chain.
Re: Best way to change valve springs?
I all ready replaced the lifters and timing chain. I just wonder what would be the easiest way to change them. Take off the heads, top dead center and use a on car spring compressor or use an air hose. We actually rebuilt the motor but didn't have a valve spring compressor at the time and we rebuilt it outside in the middle of winter so I wanted to get it back together and in the car as quickly as possible. And would it hurt to drive the car with the stock springs for a few days if you take it easy on it ?

No worries about power going off or someone tripping over the air line while you have a spring out

gaskets are cheap enough, just pull the heads and use a C clamp style valve spring compressor.
doing them on the engine is no fun.
