scrapping sound on startup...
i belive last night i noticed that now when starting the camaro there is a metal to metal scrapping sound after its been cranking already for a sec. and then she starts, starting time isnt longer its just there is the scrapping. Anyone got an idea what it could be?
I was thinking starter at first because i didnt shim it and its comming back to bite me in the azz but it sounds like its coming from the rear. Whatever it is do you think im safe with it scrapping or should it be tooken care of right away?
and i tried to make a vid and when shefirst stared it make the sound then i turned the car back off again and tuned back on but this time no sound?? HELP!

Re: :( grinding on startup
if you have a grinding you want to fix it asap cause if its your starter then you will either grind teeth off the starter drive gear or worse the flexplate, shimming a starter is not hard, if you dont have shims any auto store should have universal ones and all you do is take the starter down and put them in between where the starter meets the block. do you know where the grinding is coming from?

Re: scrapping sound on startup...
let me try this again, it actually sounds a little more like a chirp from the tires, but its defintly not that. but it has a little more metal like clang to it though.

Re: scrapping sound on startup...
Does the scrapping sound happen when you crank it and then stop and then right away start cranking again or are you just cranking it once?

Re: scrapping sound on startup...
It's just reverberating to sound like it's from the back no doubt. It would have to be a loose or distorted flexplate/flywheel if you asked me, or a starter that is too close to the ring gear. Nothing in the rear is engaged unless you're starting it in gear with a bypassed neutral safety switch.
Especially the "clang" you describe, it definitely sounds like a flexplate. That could be the whole reason you are having problems with starters and shimming them in the first place also.

I just realized that picture was a video, LOL
That is definitely your starter engaging too close to the ring gear. Put a .040 shim in there ASAP and see what you get!
