Nooooob <----
Hey guys, new member here just got my 1982 z28 pretty nice pearl white. Previous owner told me that it has sat for 3 years and never winter driven. No wheel well rust or floor pan rust with minimal body rust. Also said it has a 350 in it and from what I can see it has an aftermarket 1 into dual exit exhaust, headers, and a B&M shifter. There are a few issues with the car that I would like to figure out. ( This is my first SMBC ). Ok, onto the issues.
It's pretty weak compared to what I thought it would be like. I know it needs a new air filter and probably a new fuel pump. When I go WOT it bogs, backfires, then slowly speeds up. Also it's smoking a little bit out of the exhaust a light blue color. It smokes less after it's been warmed up though. I want to know which fuel pump I might need and if you guys have any idea how to solve these issues or any advice on what to do to my first camaro !

Does the car have a carb on it? What type?
That probably is the timing. Get a timing gun and see where your initial timing at. Also, make sure your mechanical timing and vacuum advance is working. You may want to check the fuel pressure, tell you if you need a new fuel pump.
The engine has worn valve guides, piston rings. Do a compression test. I would make sure that smoke isn't white. Check and see the oil isn't milky.

Re: Nooooob <----
the blue smoke is probably due to burning oil as was previously said the rings and valve guides are bad, how many miles are on the car?

The car has a carb, How do I check which kind, is there a serial number?

What should the timing be around? How many degrees should I go and up or down? Im guessing this is just like a guess and check process. As for the fuel pump what should the pressure be around?

I'm guessing its a 4BL, there is a holley, edelbrock, Q-Jet. An edelbrock like no more then 5 PSI fuel pressure,Holley they like around 5-7, Q-jet I have no clue. If you have a holley make sure the fuel bowls are set right. An edelbrock you have to take the whole thing apart to check the fuel bowls.
You may want to also check the vacuum lines.
1. PCV- Valve Cover to Carb.
2. Brake Booster.
3. Automatic tranny vacuum line.
4. Vacuum Advance line.
5. Cruise Control if you got.
Get some carb cleaner and spray it on the between carb to manifold. Spray it all over the place look for vacuum leaks. You will hear the rpm go up or down. You will know thats where your vacuum leak is. If you see any sign of cracking replace the line. If you get a vacuum guage you should pull 18" of vacuum at idle anything less with a stock cam probably a vacuum leak or wrong timing.
You want about 8- 12 initial and about 34 total timing. It does matter on what cam you got. I would first check if the spark plug wires are in the right order 18436572. Check and see if the spark plugs are not cracked, take the cap off the distributor and see if the rotor still looks good. If it still backfiring try moving the timing up like from 8 to 10, 10 to 12. If it still backing firing you are probably to lean. If worse comes to worse you probably skipped a tooth on the timing chain or valves are off and you need to readjust your valves. " Valve Lash"
Good Luck.
