85 firebird trans am.5.0,the vin says its a tpi but it has a rochester carb on it.the motor seems to be stock

 

It could be just about anything. Check the block and head casting numbers.

 

why does the vin say its a 305 tpi?

 

25 years ago it was.

 

but it all looks original.where are the body tags on the car?

 

It could very well be all original, just not to that car.

 

If your VIN says TPI then your car use to be a TPI. Someone could have either done a TPI to carb swap, or more likely a whole engine swap. Probably just took a whole stock engine out of something else, that would be why it looks all stock. Check the casting #'s and you'll find out what motor you have.

 

block number 14010201.says its a 80-84 305..could this be the stock motor for my 85 ta?

 

It could be the stock block, but the engine's been altered.

 

well I'm just wondering if its a 84 and the vin has been changed but it has all the body marks of a 85.the intake does have some jb weld on it.could the motor be a lg4 from late 84 and the vin be wrong?how else can I find out if the numbers match.

 

the vin plate has been rotted off and the number I have is from all the previous owners.

 

Check the cowl tag on the radiator support, see if you can find the last 5 digits of the VIN they gave you.

there is no tag on it,unless I'm blind and cant see it..where would it be?

 

Right on the radiator support near the hood latch, IIRC. It was only present through 1985, you might have a later car.
