Bought it yesterday, wont start today HELP!!

Hi guys im new here and bought an 89 camaro rs yesterday. The car has a 305 with a carburetor...it cranked and ran fine yesterday and the guy i bought it from said it ran hot and may need the water pump/head gaskets replaced...the temp gauge never passed 220. I got it to a friends house where ill be keeping it until it gets registered and all but i went over there earlier to check on it and it wont start now...if we pour gas in the carb itll crank and run until all the gas is gone but without gas in the carb it just turns over...what could it be? please dont say the fuel pump...i called pep boys and labor by itself was like 450...id really appreciate any help u guys can give...thanks in advance.

hate to say it but fuel pump could be a cause, fuel filter is another. you can take the fuel inlet off of the carb and crank to see if fuel is flowing through, that will narrow it down, could also be something in the carb is blocked off not letting fuel flow. i would start with checking for flow. what kind of pump is on it? being a carb it might have been changed to a block mounted fuel pump which is much easier to change and cheap

Check your fuel pressure before making any assumptions. Fuel pressure gauge is a rather cheap tool. It will save you head aches time and time again.

its not too hard, as long as its a carb when you take the inlet off of the carb and if its an electric pump it will start flowing when the key is on, if its a mechanical pump(block mounted) it will squirt out when the engine is cranking. what kind of carb is on it?

Check gas gauge? Take off air cleaner and open the throttle while looking down in the carb while holding the choke open, should see gas squirting in the front two throats pretty strong.

ya...i put gas in it as soon as i bought...by the time i got it to where its parked now, it had a little over a quarter tank...and ill check it sometime tomorrow when i get back to my friends house...hopefully it is anything other than the fuel pump...i cant afford getting nearly 600 worth of work done right now

Re: Bought it yesterday, wont start today HELP!!

thats all its and edelbrock carb. keep in mind that not installing a guage is definetly not the safest way so keep a fire extinguisher handy, like i said the quick way to determine fuel flow withough a guage is to pull the inlet off preferably put it in a container and see if you get fuel. obvosly there is a fuel problem somewhere just have to narrow it down as to what, that would determine if its the carb or the pump, or lines. if it hasn't been driven for a while it could have sucked up some stuf from the tank and cloged the filter or the lines which is still easy to fix. you just need to take the lines off and blow through them with an air nozzle
