Your thought about this head combo please??
Hi there, just wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this setup or if anyone is running something similar. All suggestions will be taken. But be nice! LOL!!
Stock 1989 L98 bottom end. Installing 461 Camel back heads with 2.02/1.6 valves. Heads have been machined to 58cc chambers, and I have the dished factory pistons. 1.5 Roller Rockers, Springs for the heads are good to .550 so as of now I will be running the stock cam till I can get a good price on a LT4 hotcam. If my calculations are right I will be around 11.8:1 compression ratio with a 0.015" head gasket. As of now this will be topped off with a stock TPI intake with a BBK AFPR and 24# injectors, and the stock 48mm Throttle body. Backed with a TH350 w/2400rpm stall and 3:73 gears. And 1 3/4" headers of course. Car weighs 3500 lbs with me in it.
Anyway what do you think? Other then a Tune of course, what do you think I should or shouldn't do, and what type of power do you think this combo will make around.
Thanks for taking the time to look this over, and input is appreciated.

Re: Your thought about this head combo please??
Iron heads, that compression and stock cam wont run on pump gas. Highly unlikely. I dont think the compression will be 11.8 to 1 with the 12cc dish pistons and 58 cc. Thats what L98 vettes had and they were 9.8-10 to 1 I believe so you should be fine then. Same with LT1's I think.
You should be at 10 to 1 and that may run ok on 93 oct with stock cam. Keep timing conservative and dont lean it out too much. Maybe try a step colder plug than stock.
As far as power, I dont think you will have much more than a good running L98 with touch more compression. Probably 235whp with stock TPI and that exhaust.

i had a set of 461's with manley swirl polished valves and screw in studs with guide plates, ported polished, basicall the same as urs i like the heads but its sad to say that my 416 heads actally peform better. and the fact that the 461 heads dont have acc holes. and a set of vortecs will out run them any day.

Re: Your thought about this head combo please??
Thanks for the input guys. But you guys really don't think that the larger valves and the larger runner it should get more like 300hp?? I have true 3" dual exhaust along with those headers. I was hoping to get at least around 300hp with the bigger valves, bigger injectors and exhaust etc. After all these had 245 hp stock. Maybe I should just get the LT4 hot cam right away as the season here is almost over anyway.

They actually have a fair bit of work done to them. Guides, screw in studs, hardened seats, milled to 58cc's gasket matched to Felpro 1205 intake gaskets and some port & polish work also. All done professionally not hacked up. I was thinking of putting a 100hp shot on it, but I don't want to blow the rear up right away LOL! After all the 1985 Monte Carlos SS only came with the small 7.5" 10 bolt with the 26 spline axles after all. LOL!!

They are rated at 240 ish hp stock but they dyno close to 220-230 stock depending on the condition and year. Full bolt ons will get you near 260whp which is 300-310 hp. I dont think heads will help you since your TPI is still the restriction. Stock Iron L98 heads dont flow that bad for an iron head and I dont think it would be worth it to go to another factory head unless its a set of vortecs for the right price, but then you'd need a vortec TPI intake

This engine is fresh with maybe 1000 miles on it tops. It isn't in a F body either. It is in my 85 Monte Carlo SS, I just love the looks of the TPI, so maybe some heavy port work and some SLP runners will help the situation I guess. I just want to get this car into the 12's at least, would love to see 11's but need to be realistic with my budget right now.
