The knock sensor is screwed into the water jacket. It will leak coolant if not that means you was low on coolant.

If you dont have water coming out of the block when you remove the knock sensor, you have a problem.

Is the SES light coming on when the motor is off, but the key is on? If so, that is how it is suppose to be.

Re: coolant leaking when knock sensor removed

It's very common that no water comes out when you screw out the sensor. It's not a problem, it's simply salts and deposits setting in that lowest part of the water jacket. If you stab the hole w/ a screwdriver the water will come out. In no way does it automatically mean you'e low on coolant. In fact, if the hole is open and no water comes out you're not low on coolant...you're out of coolant. The hole is originally a drain hole, it's the lowest point, removing the plug or sensor will drain all coolant from the block.

it senses certain frequencys, coolant has nothing to do with it...GM just got cheap, and instead of casting another hole, they reused the existing block drain holes.

Re: coolant leaking when knock sensor removed

you probably have a ground issue, run a tap through the hole and replace your ks pig tail. Solved my problem and I got a coolant bath too. I noticed a small drip from the hole and couldn't leave it alone so lesson learned.
