89 305 TPI still won't start
So I am posting again about my 89 vert with 305 TPI still not starting. Her eis what I have replaced based on recommendations:
Cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, ingnition module, manifold temp sensor, MAF sensor, coil, fuel filter.
I was reading a post today and think my problem may be the injectors. The car will start with starting fluid no probalem and ide for as long as I want it to run. When I turn it off then there is no restart, cold or hot. So I OHM tested the injectors today, readings as follows:
CYL 1= 11.9
CYL 2= 13.4
CYL 3= 16.7
CYL 4= 9.3
CYL 5= 16.8
CYL 6= 16.8
CYL 7= 5.5
CYL 8= 9.1
In my calculation I have 4 bad injectors. Should be a no brainer that was probably my problem the whole time. Just looking for some input. I have already dumped some money on parts that probably didn't need it, but oh well they are in there now. Could this be the last fix for now to get her running?

Sounds like a plan. Be sure to check fuel pressure too. About 40 PSI when cranking.
It sucks throwing parts at a car doesnt it? Thats why we try to diagnose the problem before buying parts.

Thanks doc, i forgot to throw that in, rail holds steady 40lbs key on, cranking and running. I do hate changing parts with no result. And most of the parts were by other people lkooking at the car and testing them saying replace that it will fix it. Car had been sitting for a long time so probably didnt hurt changing it all in the long run.

Re: 89 305 TPI still won't start
I had the same problem the car would not start, only if I sprayed starting fluid in it and it would start. later i figured out that it would start if I disconnected an injector. I figured out by feeling the injectors click that something was wrong with them, then I checked my fuel pressure and filter and it had black contaminated fuel was coming out of it. so the tank was still dirty and clogged the injectors so I put in sea foam in it and within 3 days the car would start. I still might need new injectors though.

mlopez, sounds like you will need to drop your tank and flush it along with your fuel lines. Check your charcoal canister for signs of failure. Its not uncommon for the charcoal cells to rupture releasing charcoal particles into the vapor lines. The particles may have made their way into your fuel tank.

The bottom line is that the most reliable and efficient way to clean fuel injectors is to have them cleaned and flowtested.
When we service injectors, before they are flowtested, they are placed into 2 high temp ultrasonic baths, and then they are reverse backflushed, then they go through the rest of the flowtesting process.
The benefit to having injectors cleaned and flowtested is that we are able to visualize the quality of the spray pattern and we can leak test them up to 80 psi. We also replace all filters, orings, pintle caps and spacers with new parts.
Although the fuel additives work there is no way of obtaining any of this info unless they are placed onto a bench.

Re: 89 305 TPI still won't start
Well, I received my injectors, installed them today and looky there the car starts right up. Thanks guys for all your help, one last thing I need help with until the next thing of course. It says on the hood tag to set timing at 6 degrees, but in the manuals and eveything I have looked at so far it doesnt reference a RPM to set the 6 degrees at. Can anyone help?
Re: 89 305 TPI still won't start
That's great news, I set mine to around 750 (manual trans). Make sure you pull the wire for the distributor advance (mine was in front of the blower motor for the heater - single brown wire with a butt connector).

I just checked and my #3 injector has 1.5 ohms the rest are between 14.5 to 16.6 looks like the injectors were the problem after all...........
