Multiple Issues With My Z28

hey guys! just got a new z28 a few months back, and i have a few issues, everytime the car gets hot, and i go to shut it off, it shakes rattles and rolls, what could that be? the timing? aswell it pulls to the passengers side when i hit the brakes, just replaced all new rotors and calipers, any other ideas? aswell any way i can keep it from getting so hot? its the 305ci v8. any other tuning tips would be much appreciated, thanks guys!

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

Lot's of things going on there Is the SES light on?

Yes, you might have timing related issues. Being off a tooth or being too advanced will create similar problems.

Pulling brakes: caliper sticking, kinked or collapsed (internal) brake line hose. You did replace your OE rubber brake line hoses right?

How hot is Hot? The general designed them to run 220-240 range. That is hot but if you're close to those numbers then it's as it should be. Unless, you want it to run cooler. If so, search this topic. Lot's of info and threads on how to make your engine run cooler.
Side-note: If it is running HOT that too can cause it to diesel or simulate the timing issue you're having.

Follow up with more detail for each item.

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

the only time it does the stutter is when its idling and it starts to get hot and i shut it off, as for the pulling no i did not change the hoses, thought i could get away with it i guess not though aha, could be the tires too, tires are getting kinda low.. im thinking it might be the diesieling thing because it only does the stutter when its hot.. not if i shut it off cool.., no the SES light is not on at all, aswell there pulling to the front passenger side..

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

Best way to tell if its a line is to try to compress caliper if hard to compress open bleeder if it frees its the hose if not it the caliper

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

ive already replaced the caliper(s) both of them. so it must be a line, as for the "dieseling" i beleive its getting too hot, i dont think its the timing. thanks guys! ill have to check it out.

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

240 is not normal. You should stay around your thermostat temperature during most normal driving. My 92 305 TBI runs around 195. The electric fan kicks on at 220. 240 is too hot. Do you have an electric fan, fan clutch, or flex fan? Do you have a stuck thermostat? Does it cool back down when you drive it down the road? What is the coolant level like? Does your upper hose build pressure? You may have a defective radiator cap. The pressure increase on the cap raises the boiling point of the coolant. Are you running a 50/50 antifreeze and water mixture? Straight water doesn't dissipate heat as well.

Does it labor to start when hot? Does it labor to start when cold? (timing indications)

Brakes - check your passenger side rubber hose. If fluid isn't moving easily, that will cause the caliper not to retract correctly. Do you have more brake dust on one wheel than the other?

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

details on what you mean within "labour" to start, its carbed so i give it gas turn the starter for about 3 seconds, let off the starter and gas for a second, then turn it again and it fires up no problem at all, the tire pressure is low so im thinking thats an indication of the pulling (possibly, still yet to check the hoses) aswell, for the heating the fan isnt kicking in at 220 so im gonna run it on a toggle switch i think next summer ( as it will be stored for winter) as for the "dieseling" i beleive thats what it is cause it only sputters when its too hot, i can run it for a few minutes shut it off and its fine, only when its hot does it sputter. thanks for all your input guys i really do appreciate it, any more would be great!

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

If it tries to continue running after the key is turned off (dieseling) it's due to the fuel continuing to ignite from carbon deposit hot spots. This is most common with carbs, but can happen with fuel injectors if they are leaking.

get another bottle, grab a funnel.

start the engine and open the hood. Disconnect the large vacuum line that goes to the power brake booster. Place funnel into that hose. You now have a main vacuum line to the intake manifold.

Slowly pour about 1/3 of the bottle into the vacuum line slowing down when the car almost stalls. Keep doing that until about 1/3 but no more than 1/2 is poured.

Shut off vehicle and let sit for 10-15 minutes. reconnect vacuum line to brake booster.

start vehicle, go for 20 minute ride and enjoy all the white smoke out the tail pipe.

next because you've disrupted a lot of carbon you will probably need to replace your spark plugs in a couple weeks.

One more thing, it's only about $2 more per week to use higher octane fuel and you wouldn't have these issues

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

yeah, i will be putting high octane fuel into the vehicle, it was just purchased recently so obviously he didnt do that, theres gonna be a swap soon anyways (305-383) will do what you said! thanks for your input (laughed at the white smoke part ahahha) any other maintenece tips i should know about?

filled the tire pressure up today, its got a slight pull when i hit the brakes to the passengers side, ill speed up, hit the brakes the steering wheel will turn and the car will pull to the right, im thinking air in the lines on the one side? what are my possibilities? its not a hard pull just a slight one to the right everytime i hit the brakes, they were just recently bled but maybe not properly, what should i do?

also i noticed the line running from the rad to the coolant was sweating?

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

Another thing you may want to check for sputtering is the plug wires. Mine has been sputtering at idle so I finally traced it to wires getting hot and arcing through

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

thanks alot! i have already checked those though, im more worried about the whole pulling thing, the overheating problem i beleive is the fan and the radiator cap and the fill bottle i think is all messed up, if anyone has any clue on what the pulling could be let me know! thanks!

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

I would bleed brakes again. One caliper is grabbing harder then the other maybe. Does car drift to one side when driving , or just when brakeing?

Re: Multiple Issues With My Z28

car drifts just when braking to the right side.. im thinking hoses or caliper problem.

hoses seem okay, theres a split on the fill line running from the radiator to the fill bottle, needs to be replaced, could that cause the overheating, aswell the brake hoses are okay, must be a bad pad or caliper im thinking?

fan doesnt kick on either, im thinking toggleswitch it..

thanks alot guys, aswell what can i do about my heater hoses, i dont really like them sitting on the block..
