i have an 87 trans am with a 350tpi. my car didnt turn on yesterday and when i turn the switch the fans turn on too, also i dont have no engine service light. i called a mechanic so he can come a check my car he said its the fuel pump. is there any reason the fans turn on just wen i turn the key? this had happend to me before so i change the coolant temperature sensor and it turn on good. he also said he needs to chop the exhaust in order to take out the gas tank, will this affected my exahust?

 

when you turn on the key do you hear the fuel pump prime?

 

yes i do

and the mechanic was putin gas on a hose that was in the back of the intake manifold and he said to turn the car on wil he was coverin the hole of the hose with his finger and it turn on but when he let go it turn off

Stop; the first thing any mechanic should do is determine why the CEL doesn't light.
Just because it starts with a little fuel in the intake doesn't mean it the fuel pump, especially if you can hear it prime. The fuel still needs to come out of the injectors.
If the mechanic doesn't know this he's no mechanic.
The fan turning on & no Check Engine Light is an indication that the ECM might be faulty. This can also disable the fuel pump. If you have 2 fans determine which fan is running by unplugging its relay, should be located on passenger side of radiator.
First, try re-seating the EPROM module in the ECM case.
Next, check for injector pulse with a Noid light it plugs into any of the injector connectors(this is what the mechanic should have done after it started with a fuel prime.) Buy one it will save you a lot of time and money.

Check fuel pressure and just getting a squirt from the pressure port is not good enough, pressure needs to be no less than 40.5psi with the key on and engine off.

Oh ya, most auto parts stores rent the fuel injector noid light for a nominal, usually fully refundable fee

Ok so what I did is disconnected the ecm and battery for couple of minutes and I did work! The caer turn on

 

Good, but keep in mind whatever the cause you know it's in the ECM and it may come back.

Did the fan stop turning on when the key is on and engine off?
