totally lost. 84 Z28
I have a 1984 Z28 that I got early this year, stripped down to the heads and replaced them as well as the gaskets (gaskets were blown, turned out It had 4 cracks in the heads as well, so new heads)
I got too busy for about 6-8 months to work on it at all.. finaly got a bit of time again, I got the heads back on, and just put in the intake manifaold, but aside from that I'm pretty stumped. I have a car full of parts that I don't know where they go. I had marked most everything with tape and numbers but during a big rain a rat came into the engine and pulled all my marks off to build a nest! so Im basicly at square one. Anybody know a decent step by step guide of any of the parts after heads/manifold to help??

Re: totally lost. 84 Z28
This is why photos before teardown are so important. Generally, as a professional, I try to get a project back together as quickly as possible to avoid this kind of problem but sometimes delays cant be avoided. My suggestion at this point would be to ask a member with the same model year and engine combo to send you some detailed underhood photos that may help you to recognize parts and their locations. Good luck.

I suggest posting a couple big clear photos of what you have done so far. Also lay out all your "spare parts" and get some group shots. It wouldnt be too hard for some of us to name and tell you where most of it goes as long as the photos are good.

Re: totally lost. 84 Z28
I will try and take some pictures of what I have. Alot of it I know kind of where it goes, but particular bolts and bold holes are all fuzzy now. I took pictures as I could but got ahead of myself when I had extra help. I labeled everything as I took them off, but the markings are either worn off or gone completely.
Another question to add from ASE doc is, does anybody else have an 84 Z28? 305 V8, as far as I know everything is standard on the underhood, minus intake but that is easy part and at the end.

That is a very popular early 3rd gen because of the L69 option(190HP, 305HO). Im sure there are several members who own those cars. Atleast a few which are mint condition due to rising collector value. You might find them by doing a keyword search for "84Z28".

Re: totally lost. 84 Z28
Thanks for the info. I managed to figure out a couple more pieces of the brackets for all the pumps. question, once the AC bracket is bolted on, can I remove and put back in the rocker arm covers under it? I havent put the bracket back on yet but it looks like the support arm that crosses over the top of the cover will block it from taking it off and back on when I need to adjust the lash.
And off topic question, how do I figure out if I have the HO or not? I doubt it is an HO, always assumed it was one of the majority of those made in that year, but never found out for certain

Re: totally lost. 84 Z28
ok, so ill probably have to install the bracket with the cover off so I can tighten up all the belts to turn the engine over and find TDC to adjust the lash? or is there an easier way?
I just cant seem to get the belts tight enough to turn over the engine with that support missing

You dont need any belts to adjust your rockers. Unless you replaced your rings and bearings too, you should be able to put some work gloves on, grab the crank pulley, and turn it by hand.

Turning the crank by hand, especially with plugs installed, can be easier said than done. You can use a 5/8" deep socket on a long 1/2" drive ratchet to turn the crank by way of the crank bolt. Do not turn it counterclockwise as you risk loosening the bolt.

I'd always greatly apreciate any pictures offered to me. I'm in over my head as far as complexity and time to rebuild a puzzle the hard way!

Re: totally lost. 84 Z28
Does anybody know the particulars of the mounting bolts for the exaust headders onto the block? a few were missing/broken when I got the car and bought a basic replacement set but not sure which bolts are needed for where, and how other items bolt together in those. Also, I need help re-mounting the "heat shields" in front of the spark plugs, which I know some parts connect to the headder mounting bolts as well.
Some shield mounts are torn/gone too, does anybody know where I can buy replacement shields?

i dont remember what size bolts for the headers, but you could do away with the heat shields. they sell boot protectors some are metal, others are a clothlike (kevlar?)
