You can achieve that power with vortec heads, beehive springs/retainer kit, and a cam on a 305. Still keep it very streetable too.

Re: i have $1200 and a 85 z28 with a 305

LSx for $2000 probably not. But I know of a build for a 350 with vortec heads and lt4 hot cam that is costs $1150, but you would need a lot more money to buy everything to swap over, and all the extra things to add up.

Be a role model. Drive the car. If it's running well now, keep your money in the bank.

Re: i have $1200 and a 85 z28 with a 305

1600 can put you verry close, you can start by buying the block and the rotating assembly and then buy the rest as you can, that's how i did mine

Everything in this build will cost me right at $1300. If you get a smaller cam and don't do any head work to the vortecs, you could have a really cheap build like that.

all you need really is a basic set of sockets/wrenches, torque wrench, cam wheel, and an engine stand. I know a few people with engine stands and I own one; and I am more then happy to let others borrow it. You shouldn't have to much difficulty finding someone with one.

If it's staying streetable I wouldn't go bigger then like .510" lift and that's already pushing it because you'll need an aftermarket stall converter.

Re: i have $1200 and a 85 z28 with a 305

You could always just purchase a craigslist or junkyard block and freshen it up. No need to get all those brand new guts, stock rods and pistons (if they are straight) should do you just fine.

EDIT: With vortec heads your compression might be hurting a bit. Consider getting them milled? With Vortec heads the factory lift is limited. Right around .450-.470 according to most folks. Unless you're looking for more, I've seen the LT1-LT4 factory cams most commonly recommended. You'll have trouble finding anything in the aftermarket that caters to a lobe that small (believe me, I've looked). There is a GM camshaft on sale right now that probably lopes and chops in a really fun way, but it's pretty crap as far as performance goes. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-14097395/

Other than that, LT1, LT4, L98 all offer slightly bigger cams. I think I paid 30 bucks for my L98.

If you want bigger lift, there are several available options in the form of spring kits and headwork. Ask and ye shall receive.

i might wait and save some more so when you build it up, you can do it right. look around for a big block or even a 350. i'm sure you can find one from a junkyard thats driveable if you really want something now.

look into 5.3L LSx swaps. those engines are a dime a dozen and give good power
