cant figure out my problem
well to start i have a 92 camaro that used to be a v6 and the previous owner swapped in a 89-93 or 94 350 truck engine and must have grabbed a tpi setup off a camaro(90-92 camaro wire harness is identical to diagram in haynes book). i had to replace the the whole distributor, wires, and plugs to finally get spark and i replaced the fuel pump since i wasnt getting fuel at first. Now when i try to crank it, it makes a combustion of air come out the throttle body and sometimes its a flame that comes out instead. Also, it drains my battery very fast. i have a 800 cold cranking and 1000 cranking amp battery hooked up to it and when i try to start it, the negative wire gets all hot while the battery gets drained and then i have to recharge it again. i tried to hook up another ground to the post that was the factory wire that hangs off kinda above the backside of the headlights and it started not to get so hot. it also started to attempt to start a little longer, but still drain the battery very quickly. anyone know what would be causing all this? im not good at the electric part of cars, so any help would greatly be appreciated

Check your timing mark against dist rotor position

Agreed, sounds like timing issue. And all that cranking, especially out of time, is putting added strain on the starter, causing it to get hot, creating resistance, and draining the battery way down, you might be 180 degrees off

Re: cant figure out my problem
ima try to fix the timing today for the advice yall gave me or at least get it close. im suppose to be gettin a timing gun soon from my cousin so then ill be able to dial it in perfect. the battery thing.... ive been thinkin that it may just be that it doesnt have a clean ground to it. so ima clean underneath wear the cables mount up from the neg to the body and see if that works too. the way its hooked up now is.... negative to body, then it leads to motor. should i make it go to starter instead of body first then body? and by the way, thank yall alot so far for the advice, dunno what i'd do without this site

Re: cant figure out my problem
forgot to add this but all i get out of a 800 cold crank/1000crank amp battery is like 2-3 quick attempts to start it then its dead. when i mean quick i just turn key for like 3 seconds then let it go. i figured with a battery like that it would last a little longer. but yea, im about to go work on the timing, just gotta sneak out of the house lol..... wife hates me spending alot of time on camaro like i have been lately :P

Re: cant figure out my problem
Ground can go to body then engine block, but I prefer to go to engine block first.
Something is putting up an awful lot of resistance to drain the battery that fast. check resistance between negative battery post and other end of ground cable with positive cable disconnected. If not zero ohms check cable post clamp and end connectors, and metal to metal contact patches.

There's a Set Timing Connector that needs to be disconnected (disables ECM timing control) to set the initial timing. Don't forget to reconnect when done.
