how do i know when a camaro is a real ls1?

To start, I'd look for the LS1 engine...
Could you be a little more specific as to what exactly you're asking? LS1's didn't come in 3rd gens, but plenty have been swapped into 3rd gens. I've done two myself.

There's really no mistaking an LS1 for any other chev V8. The coil above each cylinder and narrow, rounded cast valve covers are a dead give away. Not to mention the totally unique intake manifold.

Do you mean a 5.7 LT1, and not the smaller "baby" LT1?
(Like LS1's, LT1's didn't come in 3rd gens from the factory.)
