weird fuel pump issue

Fuel pump was working fine before I changed spark plugs. After I changed the spark plugs and went to fire it up to make sure everything was good the car started fine then sputtered and died. I was a little worried but after looking around for anything I messed up I realized it wasn't getting any fuel. So I checked the fuel pump relay and its got power there, I checked the oil pressure sender and its got power there, and I checked the plug at the rear end and I also have power there. So that pretty much leaves just the fuel pump right? But I can't see how just changing spark plugs would kill my fuel pump

any help is greatly appreciated

Re: weird fuel pump issue

1) If you swapped to carb, your fuel pump relay is doing nothing (unless you changed the wiring) since it's controlled by the ECM (which you no longer have) - might as well not even consider it.

2) No relay function = no priming, so it won't 'prime' like it used to since there's no ECM

3) so, the only thing running your pump is the oil pressure sending unit, and it won't run the pump until it senses oil pressure. So unless the car is running, you'll not get 12v at the pump wires (again, unless you've changed the wiring)

So - we need to know exactly how you changed the wiring for the fuel pump (if you did)

Re: weird fuel pump issue

well that may cause problems considering I'm not possitive on what the PO did to the wiring in the car. The engine was swapped before I bought the car, Howerver the fuel pump did work before. With the computer still intact does the pump start priming right when the key is turned on or what? because with mine the pump didn't prime until after the engine had been crancked over. As far as I could tell though everything looked factory.

Re: weird fuel pump issue

That's just it - without the factory distributor and TBI or TPI setup, the computer is NOT in tact. It might be there, might still have wires running to it, but there's nothing connected on engine side, so it's not doing anything except taking up space.

The computer makes the pump prime - no computer = no prime.

The way your car has been starting - is that the oil pressure sending unit (above oil filter) has been sensing oil pressure when the starter starts turning the engine, thus the OPSU turned on the pump. You have enough fuel in the carb bowls to start the car and run it about a block before they empty - so the pump has plenty of time to 'refill' the bowls.

So - I suggest cheking the fuse - pass side, between battery and fender, there will be one fuse in a weatherpack - orange wire in, red wire out. That is the fuse for the OPSU circuit.

Re: weird fuel pump issue

When you get it running again, you can remove or tuck away any and all wires from the pass side wiring harness that run into the fender - all that is computer wires that now are doing nothing.

I assume there is a vacuum advanced distributor now? Is it an automatic? How long have you had the car?

Re: weird fuel pump issue

I suppose also it's possible that you knocked off the pigtail to the oil pressure sending unit when you changed plugs, it should be right above oil filter.

Re: weird fuel pump issue

You sir are a genius!! It was that fuse just like you said. I didn't even know that fuse was there lol. But now that it's running again for now do you think that's how I should be running the fuel pump or is there a better way to wire it now that the computer is gone
